Keeping Pace at Tivoli Bays in upstate New York. “This past summer, our last in the Hudson Valley before we moved to France, my daughter Ava found that she could scale the incline by the Bays’ trail, brave the ticks, and wade into the creek. For that brief season, she allowed herself to walk delicately in the cold water, find treasures, or not do much of anything — before our move upended the life she knew.”

We moved up to the Hudson Valley from Brooklyn in May 2014. I had one friend who lived in Germantown but she fell in love and moved to Baton Rouge (@rlp121 ). So I landed with only a handful of referrals. People thought I was nuts or brave or extremely naïve to think I could pull off a move like that with two young children. But I did it with no regrets and I love you Hudson Valley-you quirky, pretentious, historic, bucolic, mess of a place. We won’t say goodbye.
