Just found out that my mom passed away in her sleep last night. I hope that she was at peace and experienced no pain. Because I know that for a long time she struggled in this world.
When I was 10 years old, she left our family to battle addiction and save herself. My brother and I found her 16 years later and began a relationship as peers. It wasn’t easy.
At a young age I held a lot of anger towards her. Constantly wondering how anyone could leave their children/family like that. However as I grew older, had children of my own and attended therapy. There were a couple of realizations:
(1) No one can know the depths of what someone else is going through
(2) She was doing the best she could, with the tools she had.
&
(3) This “life” thing in these “meat suits” can be hard.
In 2023 I brought my family to meet her for the first time, where we had a really nice week together. There’s so much gratitude to have been able to let her know that I no longer hold any resentment towards her or the choices she made….
That anger was set down years ago because it wasn’t serving anyone.
She inspired me to be a great parent and husband.
She wasn’t always around, but she will always be my mom.
