- How long should let clear flash when stacking 5 coats?
I saw a video yesterday that was very misleading on this topic, suggesting 30 min between each coat from 1st to 2nd all the way up to 4th-5th coats. This is simply WRONG. Letting your first coats flash too long can cause a few different issues such as:
- Ringing in the polishing process. (If clear sits to long before the next coat as you sand these layers during cut/buff you can find slight rings in the polished product caused from the layers not “melting together from too long of flash time)
- adhesion issues
- lifting issues
When stacking 5 coats you will follow the tds for the first flash time (between 1st and 2nd coats) being most manufacturers recommend two coats of clear that’s all the info they put in the tds. When we’re stacking 5 coats we want to allow more flash time the more we’re stacking so here’s our process when stacking AC-4521:
We use medium activator with a panel temp of 69-74 degrees and I like to reduce my clear, just a touch (7-10%)
1st coat: 15 min flash
2nd coat 20 min flash
3rd coat 25-30 min flash
4th coat 40-45 min flash
5th coat
And that’s the recipe for 5 coats of glass with no solvent pop or runs! 👏 😎🤙🏻
