Gong hei fat choy!
Prior to my work holiday party, I had never worn a cheongsam in my life. Also known as a qipao, it's a Chinese "long dress" that originated in 1920s Shanghai (where my dad's fam is from).
I'd always wanted to wear a cheongsam but I didn't want to look "too Chinese." What does that even mean? I *am* Chinese and...so why did I subconsciously shy away from *looking* it?
I could attribute it to wanting to fit in to the predominantly white community that I grew up in, but the truth is that you get a lot of weird shit when you're Asian and even more when you look it.
You lose subjectivity. You become a symbol; a monolith. People feel more entitled to touch you, use racial pickup lines on Hinge, trap you into conversation about that one ex they had that was Asian π or worse, tell you about all the things they dislike about Asian women in general. True story.
2022 was the Year of the Tiger π β intense, unapologetic, action-packed Tiger year (and my "Ben Ming Nian" or my zodiac year). I leaned in to my Asian-ness; bore it loud and proud, almost defiantly so. The #YearoftheRabbit π promises a gentler 2023, where I hope to find calm, peace and acceptance (without a razor's edge).
Make sure you go eat ALL the dumplings π₯ (for wealth), longevity noodles π (for good fortune) and Peking duck π¦ (for loyalty)! Also make sure you have time to take a nap after...
