When this guy called the day after he got the script and said he was in, I wept (for maybe the 3rd time in my life). He bear-hugged this project the whole way through.. renting us a second camera, stopping a hundred times on the street whenever people would yell “Hey Coach”, flying himself back and forth to the Midwest multiple times to promote the film to praying with my parents. Then at 80 years old, he said he’d be willing to sing the national anthem in 10 degrees weather, for a stadium of 75k people. He sure makes one rethink the word Legendary.

When people think of Hollywood they can often think of dysfunctional people. I have more grace for folks in this work after this experience. The work is hard on families. For 4 years my wonderful partner Claire has had to weather a husband who’s fighting to be present with endless conference calls, late night edits, moving kids back and forth across the country, and being pregnant + wrangling a one year old in an AirBnb during production. All the time, encouraging me to keep going and giving creative feedback. Here’s to the real stars you don’t always see in the credits.

When I woke up this am, the first thing I thought of was my bud. Always sending me inspo quotes to remember the right things-to stop working and enjoy the beauty around us. There’s so many incredible people we’ve been able to share this movie ride with, but doing it alongside my Bud, well, probably don’t have the words. @davinlindwall

A friend of mine once spoke about the importance of keeping out old photos of yourself as a child around your work desk or home. So, on the real shit, mundane or even good days, you can look hard at that little self of yours (assuming you were given a semi-good and safe childhood) and try to remember what you were so innocently hopeful and excited about. What did you just love from the beginning, not for any reason other than the thing of it? What did you believe was possible and true? The older I get, the more I believe we all have little Divine flickers that can be inherent callings, visible from day one. This isn’t to say that young Anders guzzling the Packers kool-aid would lead to my destiny of making this film. But I do sometimes wonder if there’s paths given for us to follow from early joys and delights - like whispers we need to pay more attention to, even if they seem silly or trivial. Pair those loves with the world’s need and you have yourself a real spiritual journey. In my own kids now, I try to pay attention for them, write them down and I’ll remind them someday. Because, for God’s sake, if the last 5 years ain’t a good reminder of this unimaginable phenomenon, I don’t know what else could be.

"There is no “better place” than this, not in this world. And it is by the place we’ve got, and our love for it and our keeping of it, that this world is joined to Heaven. . . ." - Wendell Berry, Hannah Coulter
