MY MARVIN HAS ARRIVED! 💀
Big thank you to @morfbeats for sending me this inspiration ~ I’ve already used it on a session and I think it’s going to become a favourite !
Some info on this amazing beast :
The Marvin is a custom built, experimental instrument created by Adam Morford (of @morfbeats )
Inspired by his grandfather’s tools, Adam constructed the instrument from steel rods, springs, and resonating bells.
The Marvin acts as both a musical instrument and a sound effect tool, creating unique, non-traditional, and emotional auditory textures, metallic screeches, deep rumbles, and dissonant, otherworldly and intense, haunting textures.
The Marvin is frequently used for sound design in films and computer games, notably appearing in Alan Wake 2
Use 🎧 to appreciate the sound - x2 @colesmicrophonesofficial 4038s, a @beyerdynamic M160 in the bell and @neumann.berlin TLM67 as an overhead - no FX or EQ added !
Send me a message or comment if you’d like to hear this sound on your music - more sound samples are in the pipeline so please follow me for more !

It’s interesting to pick some instruments at random and improvise - I find the sound of these pentatonic bells (made by Pete Engelhart) so beautifully hypnotic.
When I was younger my father used to drop me at school at 8am, an hour before school opened. Everyday I’d goto the music room, wait for it to be unlocked and then I’d spend as long as I could playing the school drum kit.
I’ve realised now that I built the studio to recreate that space - somewhere to play and develop ideas without judgement.
In terms of producing and composing, my approach has grown out of this spirit.

This year I’ve been playing alot of Cuban music from the 1950s - I’ve learnt a great deal and now feel inspired to dig deeper into the playing of the great percussion players of the era.
It’s a very humbling process !
Cachao’s “Cuban Jam sessions in Minature” (1957) is one of my favourite albums and the percussion section on the album is seminal - Rogelio “Yeyo” Iglesias on Bongo, the great Tata Guines on Conga and Guillermo Barreto on Timbale.
Transcribing Iglesias’s Bongo solo from “A Gozar Timbero” was amazingly instructive and I’ve now been inspired to transcribe the whole album !!! - more to follow …

I’m just over here enjoying some drums ….
…check out the guys over at @eminpercussion for some amazing footage of these instruments being played by the many hundreds of amazing percussionists in Istanbul …. and go buy some of these incredible drums for yourself …

The Zeze is a traditional instrument from Tanzania, East Africa - this large version of the instrument is normally plucked with the fingers - but I experimented with using a bow…. I love this sound and hope to call on it again someday !

I’m working on a tonal percussion album - I’d love to work with producers in an electronic / ambient vibe - get in touch if this is your thing ….

I return to as many of my instruments as often as I can and try to make incremental progress each time - after many years of overwhelm, I think I’m finally at peace with the process !
This is a transcription of “Dandy” Rodriguez’s bongo solo from Tipica ‘73s 1979 version of “Pa Gozar” , completing the trilogy of solos from this track I’ve posted over the last few weeks - Dandy on Bongo, Guillermo Barretto on Timbale and Tata Guines on Congas - an incredible few minutes of Latin music history ! - it’s humbling to think I was age 1 when this recording happened 😂

Really excited to have been co-producing with my favourite band going back years now - @ibibiosoundmachine - Max was up for creating a percussion rich backdrop, and as soon as I heard the chorus for this song I knew it was the one - Eno’s ideas always makes me smile ❤️🪐🪘. Good luck to the guys with their forthcoming album and tour dates 🙌
Big up @creaturegrooves for being open minded, awesome and most of all happy to leave SPACE for the percussion …. 🙌
Shakers! (2/2) - remember to consider how your shakers are interacting with other elements in the music ! - this approach has opened things up for me a great deal in the studio 👍

Shaker chat (1/2) - “niche content” you might say, but it’s something that occupies my mind and is the most important aspect of recording that perhaps gets a little neglected in today’s “Instagram drummer olympics” world 🫢

Tata Guines’s playing sits on the boundary between something that is firmly rooted in tradition , and something that is determined to break away - this passage of his playing from 1979 is a great example of his approach .
Transcribing and performing classic solos IS a “fools errand” in many ways but I learn so much from attempting them that I’ve got into the habit of setting a deadline and then moving on !
I transcribed this passage from the 1979 version of “Pa’ Gozar” written by Tata Güines himself - While it is a standard of the descarga (jam session) genre, it gained significant historical weight through its inclusion on the 1979 album En Cuba: Intercambio Cultural by the New York-based band Típica ‘73.
