Did you know that historic places can be hiding right under your nose? 👀
Today we are talking about Fanning’s Castle in Limerick 🏰
📍 Located on Mary Street, it is known as Fanning’s Castle but despite the name, it isn’t a traditional castle but a late medieval tower house, built in the 16th (or possibly 15th) century.
👤 It was purportedly the home of Dominic Fanning, a merchant and former mayor of Limerick. In 1651, he was killed by Cromwellian forces for his role in defending the city.
🏗 The tower once stood five storeys high, was built of limestone, and had an elegant design:
— a vaulted undercroft and turret staircase
— ogee-headed windows on the second and third floors
— a round-headed window with seats on the top floor
The building reflected the high status of the Fanning family, who played an important role in the city for many years.
⏳ Today, only part of the front wall remains — time and urban development have taken their toll. The ruins now sit behind fencing, hidden behind a car park.
💭 Despite this, the castle still holds importance for Limerick, adding history and character to the area and serving as a reminder of our medieval and early modern past.

Yesterday was a special day 💚
Our team came together at People’s Park to— we planted a tree in memory of our founder Denis Leonard 🌳
In remembering Denis we also take a small but meaningful step toward a better future. It’s about care, contribution, and taking responsibility for the world we live in.
It felt even more meaningful as April 22 — Earth Day 🌍 — took place this week.
A reminder that big change always starts with simple actions.
Each tree we planted is:
🌱 a fresh breath for the planet
🌱 shade and life for future generations
🌱 a reminder that we’re capable of more than we think
Thank you to everyone who was part of this 💫
Let’s remember Denis and keep making the world better — one step at a time.
