Bill Leader. What to say about Bill? Passed into the realm of spirit. So lucky to have shared what became the last chapter of his recording life. I learnt so much from Bill.
I was just a working musician who wanted to seize the means of production (how hard can it be?) and wasn’t prepared for the reality that I would actually have to just spend ages doing it and make mistakes. Bill was the most generous and wonderful guide, putting up with all my idiosyncracies, mood swings and impulsive ego trips, consistently with the most remarkable grace of just about any human I’ve known. Despite having natural ailments of a person of his advanced age (even then) he would always solidly stay on the goodfoot and bring bright energy to everything with enthusiasm and dedication for recording and tea breaks alike. He would put me to shame most times by being the chirpiest person at the session (see photo)
He really has been one of the greats in my life, an inspiration in listening, accepting and how to grow old gracefully. Seeing him get presented with his living legend (or whatever it was) award at the BBC folk awards by Christy Moore was one of the most moving moments and that was really when I became aware of just how great his work and his legacy was outside our small offerings from Limefield. The studio still rings from his attunement. Thanks & Blessings Bill. 💚🍃🌳
