Happy International Kidney Day. A day to celebrate health and those weird looking beans everyone avoids. 💕
Take a moment today, in between sanitising every orifice, to check if you’ve registered as an organ donor. In Australia we run on an ‘Opt-In’ donation policy where your organs aren’t donated automatically when you pass. In Aus your family make the final decision and often is the case when a loved one passes that it’s too hard to let go of someone early on when their organs are healthy enough to transplant.
In Spain, they run on an ‘Opt-Out’ policy where citizens are automatically potential donors when they die unless they take the time to register their decision otherwise 🙌🏻 The average wait period for a kidney transplant in Australia is 3-7yrs. This, as you’d expect, is not the case in Spain where the average wait period is at a global low of 15mths. It blows my mind that the govt repeatedly ignore proposals to change these laws. It’s so easy to add it to the to-do list and forget about it because hey, we’re young and healthy...but so were Grace and I.
