Slightly belated anniversary portrait courtesy of @atkinmedia - @likewinterblue and @pollyrowena two years and a few days into steering this venerable bookshop through the wild seas of the C21st. #BooksellerLife #BookshopLife #ChooseBookshops #SmallBusiness #IndieBookshops

Post-work commute from a hard day's bookselling disrupted by nutshells being flung at me in the road by this one... . . . . . #Grasmere #VillageLife #LakeDistrict #Cumbria #EnglishLakeDistrict #redsquirrels #redsquirrelsofinstagram #redsquirrel #squirrels @grasmereredsquirrels

Such soaring and swooping in the sunshine as the preparations are visible for @grasmeresports at the end of the month. I don't think the swallows are actually doing a lot of the work but they seemed to be inspecting the hardstanding areas on Sunday.

Another hot and sunny day at the #Grasmere bookface at @samreadbookseller ... glimpses of the morning commute, bookshop day and evening commute.

"In England, hot clear weather is most likely to be the euphoria of fever - unhealthy flush, overbright eye - that precedes the spasm, the storm. Day after day of sun is something we are unprepared for, like all extremes in a sensible moderate-minded country: 'set fair' is a term the English use cautiously, and do not really understand." This sun-drenched reflection precedes the best haunted house encounters in Rosalind Ashe's Moths, which is my book of the month in October's paperback preview, published in today's @_thebookseller ! First published in 1976, it's one of five titles reissued in the new Penguin Horror series. Also, they don't make book covers like they used to. #RosalindAshe #PenguinHorror @penguinukbooks

So enjoyed melting in the Cumbrian sunshine this weekend whilst reading Sarah Hall's excellent new novel Helm, coming in August from @faberbooks . Is it cooling to *read* about wind in heat? Yes, yes it is.

Our #IndieBookshopWeek began at @samreadbookseller in the best possible way with a lovely handwritten postcard from @susanna.kearsley . From time to time we get lovely things posted to us at the shop and it's a small hazard of a frenetic bookish life that I'm really bad at responding to them, even when they're a real buzz to receive. It's obviously trebly good when a Canadian author writes with their own bookselling tales too (We sold a copy of #TheKingsMessenger the very next day, so this is clearly how bookshop karma works).
