This is the story of how two journalists, @gabriel_geiger and Purity Mukami (@mukami_purity26 ), teamed up to uncover the deadly flaws of Kenya's healthcare algorithm that has ended up hurting those it is claiming to help.
An investigation by @lighthousereports in collaboration with @afuncensored and @guardian looks under the hood of Kenya's healthcare system.
Kenya's healthcare overhaul has been the subject of controversy, but an investigation into the AI system has uncovered just how deeply troubled Kenyan citizens should be.
Low-income Kenyans are paying more for healthcare while the wealthy often pay less. A joint investigation by @afuncensored@lighthousereports , and The Guardian reveals that the AI system used by Social Health Authority (SHA) is deeply flawed. Instead of asking what you earn, it guesses based on where you live and what you own.
And it’s getting it wrong. An internal audit reportedly warned the government. The rollout still happened. @sautisessions .
It took months of waiting, along with the Ombudsman's intervention, for the Social Health Authority to reply to our Freedom of Information Act requests regarding the data used to build SHA's means testing system.

Africa Uncensored and Lighthouse Reports appreciate that the Social Health Authority’s management took the time to respond to our publication. We also welcome rigorous public discourse and exchange, which is why we submitted a detailed series of questions to SHA before publishing on Monday 4th May, 2026, which did not receive a response until now. We believe that nothing in this response substantively addresses those questions, nor does it refute our findings.
We encourage SHA to respond to the submitted questions in detail, which, among other things, ask for key details around the equitability of the model — including for low-income households — and key design decisions that influenced outcomes therein. The public has the right to understand how unsupervised algorithms make decisions about them. We would direct you again to our reporting, findings, methodology, and our initial right of reply here: https://bit.ly/HidingBehindAI.

🚨 Did you know that prisons in Catalonia are recklessly using predictive algorithms to make decisions about prisoners' freedom?
Investigative journalist @pablojimenezarandia , in collaboration with @algorights , looked into the use of RisCanvi, a predictive algorithm being used in Catalan prisons since 2010. His investigation reveals the life-changing consequences of the indiscriminate use of such technology without the necessary safeguards, especially for people from low-income and vulnerable communities 🙅🏽♀️
🫶🏽 Pablo's work on this story was supported by the Civic Journalism Coalition, led by @europeandigitalrights , European Center for Not-for-Profit Law and @lighthousereports . The coalition connected journalists, researchers and civil society to collaborate on investigations on issues affecting digital rights and justice.
Based on their experience, coalition members also produced a practical guide to joint investigations for journalists and civil society to work together for meaningful impact. Explore the guide and find out more about the Coalition at the link in the bio 🔗
