For EUROPE we headed to a tiny island in North Macedonia called Golem Grad. It’s less than 1sq km but home to more than 5000 dice snakes which have the remarkable ability to swim and stay underwater for up to 15 minutes to hunt fish.
Had breakfast yet? He probably hasn’t.
Meet one of Europe’s most unbothered animals. The Olm (Proteus anguinus) lives deep inside the limestone caves of the Alps in complete darkness. Evolution stripped it down to the bare essentials: no eyes, no colour and absolutely no urgency. It navigates by Earth’s magnetic field and hunts by sensing vibrations through its skin. It can go 12 years without eating and still be the apex predator of everything around it, mostly because nothing else dared to show up.
In return it gets to live for over 100 years in its own private underground cathedral of stalactites and stalagmites. Honestly, not the worst deal.

Flora played a key role in rebuilding the Iberian lynx population, producing multiple cubs that were later reintroduced into the wild. After years in the breeding program, she is now preparing for release herself.
To learn how captive breeding supports species recovery — and what Flora’s release means for the ecosystem — watch Wild Hope: The Comeback Cat, now streaming on @pbsnature and wildhope.tv.

Tonight "Europe - One continent - Five Worlds" (6x50') celebrates its premiere on @arte.tv . Filmed over 1.000 shooting days across 30 European countries, it is one of the most ambitious wildlife series ever produced in Germany and also our biggest project so far.
None of it would have been possible without the trust ans support of our financing broadcasters and executive producers @kundeneimoth , @lahinzcolonia , @wdr , Ralf Quibeldey, @jorn2065 , @doclights_entertainment , Thomas Kamp, @christian_cools , @gernotlercher , Ute Beutler, Claudia Ludwig, @ardmediathek , @orf , @svt , @yle , NRK, DR.
In 2009, fewer than 100 mature Iberian lynxes remained in the wild. Scientists launched a coordinated recovery effort combining captive breeding, habitat restoration, prey recovery, and carefully managed reintroductions. These actions rebuilt wild populations to over 2000 and set the species on a path toward recovery.
To learn how long-term conservation brought the Iberian lynx back from the brink, watch Wild Hope: The Comeback Cat, now streaming on @pbsnature and wildhope.tv.

Today is World Wetlands Day!
Wetlands store carbon, protect against flooding and clean our water. They are among the most important (and threatened!) ecosystems on our planet.
For EUROPE we filmed in the Danube Delta, which is home to over 300 bird species.
