How dare we see the light in dark times. How dare we refuse to be silent.
Self portraits as Saint Lucy.
The stories surrounding Lucy’s eyes vary. One account says the governor ordered her eyes removed because her visions and prophecies infuriated him. Miraculously, her sight was restored, proving that divine vision cannot be destroyed.
Another says Lucy removed her own eyes to discourage a persistent suitor who admired her beauty. In giving them up, she affirmed her devotion, her vow, and her independence.
Whether taken from her or surrendered willingly, her eyes symbolize a deeper truth: sight is more than physical. Lucy represents spiritual perception, discernment, and divine clarity.
When soldiers came to arrest her, Lucy became impossible to lift; no force of men or animals could move her. She survived an attempt to burn her alive when the flames refused to ignite. Finally, she was killed by the sword, still speaking prophecies with serenity.
Her death reflects a soul untouched by fear. Her steadfastness in the face of violence sealed her legacy as a protector of those navigating darkness.
