“Musicians regularly go through trials by fire, but how many can claim to survive a trial by fire alarm?” – Philip Lambert, ANAM Music Librarian (2004–2023)
Having been ANAM librarian for nearly two decades, Phil always has a story or two to tell about the old days, and they’re all worth writing down for posterity. Read the one about the lightning strike on the South Melbourne Town Hall tower on Phil’s ANAM30 webpage. With ANAM moving back there in 2028, it really feels like going back to the future!
We were also very lucky to capture Phil’s recollections of ANAM’s first 30 years, also published on the ANAM30 webpage (link in bio).
✨Millennium Canticles
Friday 15 May 2026, 7PM
Abbotsford Convent
Join Kaylie Melville this Friday at @lifeatanam , where she will direct ANAM’s percussionists in Missy Mazzoli’s Millennium Canticles — a post-apocalyptic song cycle that reimagines ritual in a fractured world.
Written in 2022 for the Chicago ensemble Third Coast Percussion, the work blends ancient chant with mechanical rhythm and flashes of dark humour. Its five movements follow a community of imagined survivors rebuilding belief through sound — part prayer, part invention.
Under Kaylie’s direction, ANAM’s percussionists bring this strange, compelling world to life, revealing Mazzoli’s vision of renewal through rhythm, precision and play.
Program:
Jeanette LITTLE Shifting Worlds
Missy MAZZOLI Millennium Canticles
Thomas MEADOWCROFT Home Organs

“I’m equipped to go into the future and make an impact in the music scene...because of the training and support I’ve received here [at ANAM]” - Emica Taylor (NZ) flute

ANAM at Elgee Park: Autumn
Sat 16 May, 2pm
In just a week, ANAM musicians travel to the Mornington Peninsula for the final performance of the unique partnership with Elgee Park. The program brings together three very different approaches to chamber music: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, written at the height of Vienna’s clarinet craze; Jeanette Little’s ‘Shifting Worlds’ with contrasting instrumental lines, and Madeleine Dring’s ‘Trio’, a work that carries traces of cabaret, theatre music and post war London.
Wine tasting will be available on arrival, with a cash bar running throughout the afternoon. After the performance there will be a complimentary afternoon tea and the opportunity to taste and purchase Elgee Park wines.
🔗 A few tickets left, book via the link in bio.
