mac miller’s high school teacher said he was “one of those students that you love to have in class.”
he often skipped class but stayed on campus to write lyrics while others were studying. the teachers weren’t too strict about it because they saw how serious he was about music, and he would even hand out some of his mixtapes for free.
at the time, he was still releasing music under the name “easy mac,” but he would soon go on to make his breakout mixtape “k.i.d.s.” while still in school, which has since become an anthem for graduations.

the iconic “tunnel scene” in the perks of being a wallflower features heroes by david bowie, despite the original book using landslide by fleetwood mac.
director stephen chbosky said he made the switch because he wanted a track that felt bigger and more explosive for the moment the city appears on screen.
the scene was filmed in pittsburgh’s fort pitt tunnel, which the production shut down for two nights in 2011 to capture the real skyline reveal instead of using cgi.
in the early 2010s, some iphone 4 users started intentionally cracking the glass backs of their phones and filling in the lines with color.
because the back panel was made from a single sheet of glass, the cracks would spread across the surface. people then traced those lines with markers, highlighters, or dye to make their phone look more unique.

MF DOOM’s signature mask was partly inspired by the helmet worn by maximus in the film “gladiator,” which he later adapted into his own iconic design.
he began wearing a mask in the late 1990s to keep the focus off his personal identity and on the music. the persona itself drew from doctor doom of marvel’s fantastic four, helping shape his image as hip-hop’s “supervillain.”
after the death of his brother and the end of his group kmd, DOOM bought a collector’s display gladiator mask, which his friend ripped from its wooden stand and repurposed into the first version of the iconic mask.
“i thought it’d be an easy way for people to see and differentiate between characters, sorta like when an actor gains weight for a role.”
in december 2000, casio released the first watch with a built-in camera, called the wrist camera WQV…
it captured 120x120 pixel grayscale images, just about the same resolution as the game boy camera from the same era. the watch also had 1 MB of memory and could conveniently store up to 100 photos at a time.
despite its outdated software being packed on a disc and requiring several adapters, the silver edition watch has since become a collector’s item, still averaging around $250–300 on the second-hand market.

as early as 800 BC, wealthier african and etruscan women wore gold bands in their teeth as symbols of status. in mesoamerica, the mayans decorated their teeth with jade for spiritual and social reasons.
after artists like nelly and lil wayne brought grills into the mainstream in the early 2000s, modern artists like lelo, asap rocky, ken carson, and osamason have continued showing their love for grills as a form of self-expression.

jung yeondoo’s “wonderland” photo series took drawings from children aged 5 to 7 and turned them into fully staged photographs using real locations, props, and people.
yeondoo (@momorashii ) wanted to recreate the drawings in the purest way possible, closely matching the original sketches and colors while preserving their spontaneity.
created in south korea, the series explores the space between childhood imagination and the realities of growing up there.

the iconic dancing scene in napoleon dynamite was actually improvised entirely by jon heder while filming, to the song canned heat by jamiroquai.
when asked about the song, he said: “i was obsessed with jamiroquai. i just loved them. when their newest album came out, that was the album i was dancing to everywhere.”
director jared hess later revealed that heder also danced to other songs with similar tempos in case the licensing request for canned heat was denied. those included little i, also by jamiroquai, and off the wall by michael jackson.

kendrick lamar’s custom “crown of thorns” made by tiffany & co. for the big steppers tour (2022)
crafted over 10 months, the crown was handmade by tiffany artisans in new york and italy. it features 50 polished titanium thorns, each hand-set with micro-pavé diamonds, totaling more than 8,000 stones and around 137 carats.
the design was inspired by jean schlumberger’s 1947 “thorns” brooch, a historic piece from the tiffany archive. lamar wore the crown during key performances on the big steppers tour and in high-profile appearances, including glastonbury.
the piece took more than 1,300 hours of labor to complete, and symbolizes sacrifice, suffering, and the burden of fame.

radiohead’s “ok computer” album cover from 1997 features a photo of a highway interchange in hartford, connecticut, where interstate 84 and interstate 91 meet.
radiohead visited the city during their 1996 tour, and thom yorke was reportedly unsettled by the city’s sprawl, highways, and corporate surroundings.
those experiences later influenced the album artwork, which used the photo for its final cover design.
