SchMERZen when I heard our chancellor was complaining about being the most hated president on the internet in Germanyās history.
Thought it was time to step up and show some support.

This video was originally recorded for other purposes. This is NOT a comparison between Germany and Australia.
I do recognise that Australia has its own genocidal history, as much as I do recognise that what is and has been happening in Germany, during the last 3 years especially, IS very alarming.

Our first stop is Cairns.
A relatively young city, that sits on Yidinji land.
It only took shape little before 1900. Born from gold fever, when the first settlers pushed inland chasing fortune, the city grew as their gateway. A threshold between the coast and everything that lay beyond it. Standing here, you can still feel that restlessness. A place built for movement, for passing through.
And people did arrive, from everywhere. Today Cairns is Queenslandās third largest city. A popular destination for tourists and backpackers chasing visa renewals.
Coming in the low season, I guess we will only get to know the unhurried, local, and chilled version of this city.
Populations living here are mostly descendants of immigrant communities from Asia and Europe. But there is a strong Aboriginal community too.
We are here because we believe our family spent some time here before heading west. We are not sure. But we know we may find proof of their passage here. Church records, administrative traces. That eventually will lead us to my mumās birth certificate.
We had heard that Italian families put down quiet but significant roots here. We have not found them yet.
Either way, we are enjoying our time here. Free BBQs along the esplanade. A public swimming pool open to everyone. Water fountains along the waterfront promenade. A public library with functioning air conditioning, plenty of PCs, and comfy couches. Looks like a city that takes care of its people, which makes it a solid 10/10.
Letās see what we can find.

Our route to Australia .. 70 years later!
My grandfather left a small town in the Veneto in 1951 and got on a boat to Australia. 6 weeks through Genova, the Suez Canal, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, into Melbourne, then north to Queensland.
We just landed in Cairns. WE ARE HERE!
96 hours. Milano to Istanbul to Bali to this. Half the worldās air routes disrupted, but we made it. The air is thick and warm and smells like nothing Iāve ever smelled before. Mum hasnāt said a word since we landed. Sheās just looking.
We donāt know what weāre going to find. We donāt know if the towns still look the way he described them. We donāt know if anyone who knew our family is still there. We donāt even know for certain weāll find her birth certificate.
But, hey, we are standing on Queensland soil!

āFantastic time to fly to the other side of the world to look for our family historyā
In 1951, my grandfather left Italy with a one-way ticket and a long boat journey to Australia. Two years later, my grandmother followed him.
My mum was born in Queensland. She left when she was two⦠and sheās never been back.
Neither of us have ever really been to this part of the world before. So we have decided itās time to go back to the place she was born.
To find her birth certificate.
To walk the cane fields my nonni talked about for 40 years.
To find the people who are still there.
So yeah I guess this is us⦠flying 17,000 km to search for a document that might not even exist anymore, in a continent neither of us has ever (really) been to.
Doing my best to document everything. Come with us on this journey.
2026 we are still watching few people profiting from death and suffering while the rest has to live with the consequences.
Weāre going back to Australia to trace our family history. The story of the hundreds of thousands of Italians who left for Australia after the war.
The story of the millions of people who have been forced to leave home looking for something better elsewhere.
And the story of the generations after. The ones who only know what home used to be through other peopleās memories. Who grew up hearing the stories but never got to see the place.
Iāll be doing my best to document everything. Join us through this journey. šæ
