The diptych, in the context of religious iconography, is an altarpiece typically used to tell a story or draw contrast, as in Conductor, Conductor. Not only are the physical blueprints of the body and the church similar, but the placements of their energy centers is what appears to be the most striking. Normally the diptych is smaller so that it can fit on top of an altar, but by making the piece oversized, it invites the viewer in. With a body on the canvas that is almost to the scale of that of the viewer’s, it offers the opportunity for contemplation within a similar size perspective. Ultimately, the diptych is a common form of expressing Western religious artwork, so by placing new and overlapping Eastern religious ideas in it, Conductor, Conductor aims to bridge the gap between the two traditions through an experience familiar to those of Western worship.
