BREAKING: Cllr Soraya Adejare crossed the council floor tonight to join the Green Group!
Hackney Green Group Co-Leader @zoegarbettgreen says: âTonight we are so proud to welcome Soraya to join the Hackney Green Party. Her move to join the Green Group sends a clear message: Hackney residents deserve representatives who will stand up for their communities, not simply follow party lines. Soraya has the respect of residents for her bold advocacy. She fights residents who deserve decent and affordable housing, youth services, and against racist policing. We look forward to fighting for the people of Hackney together.â
Cllr Adejare, who previously served as the Speaker of Hackney, has served Hackney residents for more than a decade and has built a reputation as a fearless advocate for working-class communities, social and private housing tenants and those too often ignored by the political establishment. Soraya grew up in Hackney and lives in social housing, she has long used her position to challenge injustice and ensure residentsâ voices are heard at the highest levels of decision-making.Â
WELCOME TO THE GREEN PARTY! đ
Another successful local meeting where we got to meet fellow members, talk shop and hear from @liamhackneygreens about what itâs like being a green councillor!
Itâs absurd that a country as wealthy đˇ as the UK even needs an Index of Multiple Deprivation. Tools designed to map poverty shouldnât be necessary in a nation with such vast resourcesâbut they are, because inequality has been allowed to grow. The rise in food bank use is a clear sign of this failure. Food banks were meant for emergencies, yet more working families rely on them just to get by, while wages lag far behind the cost of living.
In a rich country, people shouldnât struggle to afford food. They shouldnât depend on charity to survive. The very need for deprivation indices shows that something is fundamentally wrong with how wealth and opportunity are shared.
Hackney Green Party stands in solidarity with everyone affected by Hurricane Melissa, which has brought devastation to Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Cuba.
Hackney's connection to this region runs deep. We know that so many people in Hackney and across London will be impacted. We recognise that the full extent of the situation is currently not known and that many places are still braced for impact.
Our thoughts are with you as you await news and support loved ones. We encourage those who can to support community-led recovery efforts.
If you know of any recovery efforts or ways to donate, please dm them to us and we will share on our platforms.
This morning, we got up with renewed energy and hope to keep going.
Hackney Greens now have 2,250 members, with over 500 joining in the past week.
Together, weâre charting a new path đ
The owner of Faith in Nature Juices has been up against this constantly, and since Iâve tried to support since last summer Iâve seen very clearly what heâs had to deal with.
So much of being a councillor is just hitting a brick wall of bureaucracy like this. Why is something so simple made this hard? Policies like this are set by council political leadershipâŚ.so change them?
The council talks a good game about supporting independent and Black-owned businesses in Hackney. Though theyâre happy to turn around with these âcomputer says noâ answers.
Hackney is in a dire financial position. Youâd think theyâd welcome new independent commercial activity and opportunities in spaces that could be clearly managed and maintained well. Instead, Hackney are clinging on to leaving a paved forecourt often used as a toilet empty and say its for residentsâ benefit.

Following years of pressure from Hackney Greens and renters unions, the council is opening consultation to introduce landlord licensing.
Hackney Labour pledged to bring this in within two years in 2022, and Greens have been pushing to make this happen ever since, with renters now having the chance to make their voices heard.
Hackney Green Party also thanks @acorn_hackney who have got a response you can add your name to or use their response. Check it out.
The consultation runs from the until the 21st of September 2025. Links in Hackney Greens bio.
