Keeping with the theme of mixing bird plumages and structure, I introduce the next set of swapped species: The Ruddy Longspur and Black Longspur (or Turnspurs, if you will). As you can probably guess these are Ruddy and Black Turnstone flavoured Longspurs.

This group has captivated my imagination ever since I started birding. Back then, this complex was regarded as merely the ‘White-winged Scoters’, which encompassed all three species under one umbrella. Each species are loosely distributed across the continents of the Northern Hemisphere, however they are known to wander as vagrants from time to time. Stejneger’s Scoter — East Asia, White-winged Scoter — North America, Velvet Scoter — Europe and Western Asia.
