See them together as one. One person. Because where is light, there is darkness. And where there is happiness, there is sadness.
See how sadness is not the opposite of happiness? And love is not the opposite of hate. It is indifference.

The girl in the white kimono is everything society wants women to be: innocent, caring, soft and nice, just pleasant.
The girl in the black kimono however, is part of the girl. The reality. Everything that has ever happened to the girl, past experiences like abuse, harassment, death, diseases and disorders, family and peer pressure, inequality and every trace that was left behind when someone tried to put her down. The dark mark that this leaves behind is anxiety, trauma, maybe even depression.
This is often not visible to the outside world and everytime she is told that she is too sensitive, that she is overreacting, she builds up the wall around her even higher. Indifference is left. A feeling of insignificance maybe.
The dark part is consuming and won’t disappear all alone. There is a lot of healing to be done and although everyone has to go through healing alone in the end, support is so important. Even if you haven’t gone through this by yourself, try to be considerate to each other. If someone offends you, reacts passive aggressive or cries easily, there might be way more behind the reaction than hormones or a casual bad mood. If someone keeps cancelling on your meet-ups because they feel tired or exhausted and you get frustrated, try to understand where this exhaustion comes from.
It is very hard to understand indeed since science can’t easily explain any mental health issue, an invisible but existing issue.
This photoshoot is a reaction to society. A reminder that you are not alone. I hope you get through the hard times.
I am sorry to everyone whenever I was too inconsiderate or self-centered to truly see how deeply you were struggling. I feel utterly sorry for everyone who had to make bad experience, no matter age, gender or origins.
It makes me sad and leaves tears rolling down my cheeks, I wished I could be there for you the way you need me to. I wished more people were there for you. You are loved, no matter how cold this world seems. Life is a gift but it can also be a punishment. Don’t lose hope, keep pushing, open up to others and seek friends who are a safe place to you.
