A year ago today Bridgeport police murdered Dyshan Best. He was unarmed, contrary to what they claimed. Most people are now learning of his story in mass media as “a man who was supposed to get into an ambulance after being shot by police but instead another officer took it” but he was so much MORE than that. He was a father, a brother, an uncle, a son & a friend to many in his community. He was a CDL-truck driver. He was mourning the loss of his friend & even was the pallbearer the day of the funeral when he was ruthlessly gunned down by Bridgeport police. He had a Remy bottle & his cellphone in his hand. This same department murdered 15-year-old Jayson Negron in 2017 & told his family he died on scene despite a video surfacing showing Jayson hancuffed on his back, bleeding and breathing with no aide rendered. The media won’t press what many saw happen in real time when this same department used an AI generated image from the body camera video to create a gun in his hand & tried to frame Dyshan. The measures they will go are sickening! When @joegrits Dyshan’s close friend told me his family requested me to document his funeral, I was in disbelief. At the time, I had never filmed a funeral before, let alone in this capacity. His family wanted the public to see what Bridgeport did to him like how they did Emmit Till. I prayed so deeply before, after & during the completion of this Homegoing Highlight. I cried editing & felt the spirit of Dyshan, tho never having met him. I knew it was my biggest task from God even when I doubted the worth of my position. I trusted him & knew I would deliver for Dyshan’s family. When I think about what the media should see, it is precisely this video. It shows who he was, his impact, his children and family & the deep wound this department has left on his family and community. Above all, it shows his worth as human being who didn’t deserve to tragically lose his life to police for simply running away. Most people don’t know how often Connecticut police are killing black & brown people here until their stories go viral. Yet his family has & continues to fight after a year for his justice!
