MELB FASHION WEEK // Attended the Melbourne Made Runway which was super cool to see all 100% made in Melbourne garments!!! Although when I started modelling I did so many student runways, which even though not branded “Melbourne made” were generally 100% Melbourne made and similarly super exciting and innovative design… I feel like fashion can be so free when artists & businesses aren’t worried about saleability and making a profit, and you can see that in student design because it’s all about the design and not about whether 100s of people will buy it…. I wonder what fashion would look like if we introduce a basic wage for artists as they are doing in Ireland, will people make more interesting clothes that fewer people buy, that are higher quality? And consequently will people dress with more variety and street life become like a landscape of walking art that further inspires creativity in us..?
Kudos to these Australian designers who are pioneering the Melbourne made already - and kudos to @melbfashionweek and @melbournemadeevent for encouraging and shining a spotlight on “Melbourne Made” slow fashion, every bit of awareness counts. I know many more brands that are Melbourne made and could benefit from this platform expanding further. I’d love to see @cityofmelbourne & @vicgovdffh look into whether Ireland’s research of the benefits to society (including economic) of supporting artists can be applicable here. 💓❤️🔥💛💖💓❤️🔥
