This is going to be a really remarkable conversation, not least because the legendary Garth Nix (not shown) is going to be in on it too. May 23rd at the Sydney Writers Festival. .au/program/festival-2026/fantastical-worlds/

Today I stumbled on forensic evidence that my old band from the 1990s, Monterey, actually existed. I thought we vanished without a trace. Regardless I'm pretty sure that nobody who remembers Monterey will like or comment on this post, because they are no longer speaking to me.

I'm not sure if I'm more emotional or scared right now, so I'll go with both! Thank you a million times to @lisa_the_destroyer for the cover art.

"I insisted that the god of sleep be shown on the toilet. So if anyone is offended by that, that is completely my fault." I talked to @publisherswkly.bsky.social about writing a picture book: /pw/by-topic/childrens/childrens-authors/article/99960-four-questions-for-lev-grossman.html

Today is the official book birthday of THE GOD OF SLEEP! Written by me with gorgeous illustrations by @kim.lien.huynh -- for example this one of the God of Math, who is obviously doing some serious differential calculus or something in her head here. (Keep clicking for a drawing of a polar bear sleeping in a bathtub. And the beautiful cover.) THE GOD OF SLEEP was inspired by, among other things, my love of mythology and of the nonsense poems of Edward Lear. It's not easy to get the word out about picture books—it's very much a word-of-mouth business—so if you have or know a small child who likes rhymes or beautiful drawings or polytheism, consider mentioning THE GOD OF SLEEP to them and/or their parents!
