🔍🔤💻 Portamento is a flexible, lively font family custom-designed for Google Developers. Rather than aiming for mathematical perfection and rigidity, Portamento specifically punctuates words with organic moments of charm and friendliness — especially valuable when reading or writing code. The design blends a constellation of shapes with rounded terminations (blue, above), rectangular features (yellow) and angular terminations (green), to maximize legibility by differentiating letters. Read our latest case study about the process of creating Portamento, now on our site! #customfonts #typedesign #googledevelopers #customtype #typography #designdetails #monospace

We designed Portamento for Google Developers by leveraging the power of interpolation with custom software. First, we built a proportional typeface with an interpolation range from light to dark weights and narrow to regular widths. Next, we translated this proportional typeface into a monospace design with our custom software, which allowed the two subfamilies to share the same DNA of shapes. This software assembled a monospace typeface by mixing together the wider drawings for typically narrow letters like ‘i’ and ‘l’ and narrow drawings for wide characters like ‘m’ and ‘w’, to achieve an alphabet where every letter matched in width. Learn more about our process by reading the Portamento case study on our website! #customtype #casestudy #googledevelopers #monospace #customfont #typedesign #typography #customtypography #interpolation #drawingletters
