hello bards. for six aprils we’ve written together…escapril was just a little idea hatched a decade ago that became a community and ritual…oh…i have some news: after much reflection i’ve decided escapril won’t go ahead this year. this isn’t a decision made suddenly or lightly..i had a very transformative year..i learned a lot about creativity..the truth is, excitement is everything…and my excitement for now is pointing elsewhere.
i need to express my profound gratitude to everyone who’s participated over the years…whether for one or every day. your poems have moved and surprised and thrilled me. i’m so happy to have played any role at all in your creative journey. it’s a total honor.
the spirit of escapril was and continues to be the finding of beauty in ordinary things..giving yourself permission to write badly and try…i hope this spirit follows you like a friendly ghost into whatever you make next.
keep writing if it calls to you..don’t if it doesn’t. but whatever you do..move towards what lights you! what *really* lights you!! not what you do out of obligation or because you think you’re supposed to. no one else can tell you what that thing is. it lives in you. it sings you little songs in the morning that you can hear if you are quiet.
i’m so glad to have shared this space and time with you. thank you for six beautiful aprils, and your brains, and your guts.
sav p.s. past prompts will stay up! it might even be fun to revisit them, to see how you’ve changed.
an updated (and belated, sorry) rules page for 2024!! IT KICKS OFF TOMORROW!! holy cow!! i’ll be back here at midnight..tag your friends, ready your pens.. #escapril2024
