Out today! A "studio" recording of very beautiful music by @let.fade.completely on the mainly slow bandcamp channel, with lush artwork by @zbeler : /album/overflow This release presents three versions of “Overflow” by Jashiin, a slow work of long suspended chords, in which the colliding frequencies of adjacent notes produce a wide variety of acoustic effects. In the liner notes, the composer describes the piece as “a moment of charged calm, held for as long as I could manage to hold it.” A sequence of three versions were recorded for this release, inspired by the tradition of tea brewing in the Sahara: The first cups contain a very strong brew with no sugar, then sugar is gradually added for subsequent brews until it almost overpowers the flavor of the tea. The effect is sometimes described poetically: “The first cup is bitter like life, the second is sweet like love, and the third is gentle like death.” The album comes with a PDF booklet with an extended and personal essay by Jashiin about the genesis of the work, and photographs by Huw Morgan. #newmusic #contemporarymusic #slowmusic #organmusic #jashiin #saharatea

NEW ON MODE RECORDS Jashiin: Interior/Exterior Pieces JASHIIN (b.1984) (@let.fade.completely ) Interior/Exterior Pieces (2019–21) Performed by Zeynep Büşra Eldem, piano (@zeynepbuschra ) mode 356 Available from Mode website or Bandcamp (links in bio) $9 (digital only, includes liner notes) This release presents a contemplative work for piano by Istanbul-based composer Jashiin (b. 1984) performed by pianist Zeynep Büşra Eldem. Its music lies within the iconoclastic tradition of Howard Skempton and early John Cage. Interior/Exterior Pieces is a seven-movement piano cycle that creates and explores an imaginary home by using textures and rhythms as musical symbols. A descending chordal passage might indicate a staircase; music played forwards and backwards might show a mirror on a wall. A wide arpeggiated chord could be a gust of wind, or fresh air entering a room through an open window. Textures, echoes, symmetries, reflections: the symbols and their meanings carry over from movement to movement, until the listener is immersed in this musical language and can create their own visions of a house and a garden near the sea. Jashiin writes in his extended and personal liner note essay: “The idea [of the music] coalesced into a short excursion inside an imaginary house, and as I listened to the finished piece, it was becoming clear to me that the house was empty, and that I knew the view outside… I didn’t think of specific locations, only of what I imagined such homes might look and feel like inside and out. So the imaginary villas became populated with my obsessions: my fascination with nature reclaiming abandoned human homes, my distrust of mirrors, my love for the sea.” Album cover and artwork by Zeynep Beler. This Friday, @moderecordsinc is releasing a recording of Interior/Interior Pieces, a seven-movement cycle of piano pieces I composed in 2019–21, performed by @zeynepbuschra . I’m very excited to share this news: I think the music is some of my best work, and I really love this performance. Working on this album with Zeynep was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. She pretty much nailed the entire thing at the very first rehearsal, and some of her interpretive choices were better than what I had written in the score. I couldn’t believe my luck, and I still can’t believe that I am so fortunate to know this woman: a terrific friend, intelligent, kind, confident, with a healthy no-nonsense attitude towards both art and life, an open-minded and always curious person I can talk to about absolutely anything, from Clarice Lispector’s novels, to Nigerian pop they played at a club we went to the other day, to Korean food, cat pillows, and linguistics. This record wouldn't happen if it weren’t for another close friend, @scbirmaher . One of the most important people in my life, he has been a constant source of inspiration to me for over a decade now: the kindest, sweetest, most understanding person, a fiercely independent thinker with an insatiable appetite for knowledge, and one of the best composers I know. When he found out we were recording this piece with Zeynep, he offered to help find a way to publish the album, and it’s through his hard work, determination, and meticulous planning that we’re able to release this music on Mode. And I’m extremely grateful to Mode Records for providing this opportunity. Last but not least, two other friends played a huge part in this project: @oz_oguzoz who recorded and mixed the music at MIAM Studio, and @zbeler who let us use her artwork for concert posters in 2024, and then designed the album cover. Feeling really happy today to finally be able to release the recording of Oscillon, an installation we did last summer with @zbeler at @pasaj.istanbul at @barin_han - this is a half-hour stereo mix of the original 4-day quadraphonic installation. Designed to transform the sound of traffic into the sound of surf on an alien planet, to listen while you also see sound moving in Zeynep's drawings, and can touch the sound because the floor is covered with audio cables. Thank you to @elifabursali @secil.yaylali and @selin.atik for curation and organization, @_abdullahguler for help with the setup, @kilincouz for letting me borrow equipment, @crnnyygn for photographing the event, @srokasonic for introducing me to Pasaj crew, @zbeler for agreeing to do this project with me, @_minyu____ for appearing with a guest performance (which you can see on his YouTube channel!), and to everyone who came to the show.
