°•°*✶°*•·We perform as a group of tricksters; characters amalgamated from different historical mythological creatures. Gathering in a conference room, we are here to try and build a trickster nation. How, you might ask, can a group of shape-shifting, a-moral, individuals always on the outside of the collective, trouble-making truth seers, sacred liars unify under a sovereign nation? This remains to be seen. In this residency, we focus on the creation of a national trickster rhythm. Borrowing from a bag of stolen rhythms (mostly diasporic Jewish rhythms presumably stolen from myself) or stolen footage from movies about powerful nations, we will search for the most trickster elements of each rhythm in order to build a new hyper-pure-trickster rhythm.

Radio Donna
26.& 27.01.2024
@mousonturm
When the Italian autonomist workers’ movements in the 1960s and 70s rejected classic forms of unionised organisation, their collective struggle gave traction to the feminist movement and the refusal of work. A decentralised network of free radio stations throughout the country informed and politicised listeners.
Radio Donna is a piece that takes its cue from this volatile past. Winding its way through a series of references, tongue in cheek gestures and manipulations, Radio Donna meanders through scenes and sequences like a fictional broadcast or an impossible song. If, as dance “revolutionary” Yvonne Rainer stated in an interview, “the contrast between abstract movement in overlaid with facts and history continues to be a challenge,” Radio Donna expands the scope of this question by operating through a body language of contradictions, doubt and pleasure.

Boccalero
“If you pray more than 15 minutes a day,” she would say, “there’s probably something wrong with you. If you have your deity in your heart, there’s no reason to beg.”
Written and recorded during her stay at the Villa Aurora, Laura Stellacci’s radio piece is an audio-notebook, of sorts, compiled while researching a part of East Los Angeles’ local history. It is an evocation of the figure of an unconventional Franciscan nun, Sister Karen Boccalero(1933-1997), and the mark she left on Self-Help Graphics and Art, the experimental printmaking center that she co-founded with the queer Mexican artists Carlos Bueno and Antonio Ibañez in Boyle Heights. Her fictional stream of consciousness revisits several moments in time, like the brief period when SHG hosted a punk club in its basement: the Vex would become an important musical incubator for Chicano and Latin/x punk bands in the 1980s. The organisation continues to be an important cultural center for Chicano Art today, encouraging and supporting aspiring artists.
The piece will air on this year’s DĂa de los Muertos on occasion of the holiday during which the living pay their respects to those who have died. As a reclamation of indigenous identity and a social aspect of the Chicano movement, SHG played an integral role in the revival of the Day of the Dead celebrations in California.
