SAHA & The Centre For The Less Good Idea
International Exchange
In 2026, The Centre for the Less Good Idea and the SAHA invite applications from artists living and working in Türkiye to participate in a one-month international exchange in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The exchange is aimed at providing participants with the opportunity to explore The Centre’s unique methodology of collective, collaborative, and interdisciplinary making, and to use this experience to inform their own work.

📣THE CENTRE FOR THE LESS GOOD IDEA x VALDEMAR SLOT ARTS FOUNDATION 📣
For its first large-scale artist residency, Valdemars Slot Arts Foundation has invited The Centre for the Less Good Idea to relocate from Johannesburg for creative research, rehearsal, and performance across 2026.
Their spring residency culminates in a live weekend celebrating the season’s launch, 23–25 May.
Led by The Centre’s Director Bronwyn Lace and Impresario Neo Muyanga, the residency brings together performers 🎵 Anathi Conjwa (singer-composer), Thulani Chauke (dancer-choreographer), and Micca Manganye (percussionist) 🥁 in collaboration with Denmark-based artists Andreas Borregaard (accordionist), 🩰 Magnus Christoffersen and Amelia Coleman (@svendborgballetteater ), Polina Fradkina (pianist), 🎹 and Halina Wigocka Wamberg (cellist).
The evolving programme of installation and live performance develops in close dialogue with the historic site and its rich musical archives. Collaborative films inhabit the palace attic and flood the Corn Barn’s floor, while interactive shadow theatre transforms the old Carriage Barn.

A feminist retelling of the story of Euridice, which views her as not just the late wife of the musician, Orfeo, but as a woman who relishes in the independence and solitude she finds in the Underworld.
📌EXCESS (BEAUTY)
A lesbian couple, who are priests in the Anglican Church, live in a shadowed commitment. With one decision by the Church, their lives splinter.
📌INHLAMBULUKO
Inhlambuluko explores the intersection of African spiritualities and Catholicism as it’s been claimed and reimagined in the context of Southern Africa.
📌DANKIE BHOZA
Dankie Bhoza looks at the reality of being a Pantsula, with a focus on how amaPantsula survive as cultural activists and entertainment entrepreneurs alike, through their ‘many offices’ of self-employment.

📌VENUS IN FOUR ACTS
Venus in Four Acts explores notions and representations of the body in opera, Black feminisms, institutional critique, and the ethics of looking, anchored in an imagining of the many lives of Saartjie Baartman.
📌TURN SKIES BACK
Turn Skies Back draws on Benjamin Britten’s 1945 opera Peter Grimes, but is set in turn-of-the-century Eswatini, as white settlers from Europe, and Britain, and Ireland in particular, begin to move in.
📌DILIKA
A tale of love across language, distance, and culture, as a young man from France meets a young woman from South Africa, in the vibrant streets of Johannesburg.
📌UBUTHONGO
UbuThongo follows a young protagonist, Lizwi, who is being called upon by her ancestor, Nomnganga, to claim her place as the voice, and the healer of her community.

📣CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: THINKING IN | EXPLOSION OF A MEMORY 📣
📌SO | The Academy for the Less Good Idea calls 12 Johannesburg-based artists to apply for THINKING IN | EXPLOSION OF A MEMORY, a five-day mentorship led by Belgian artist and theatremaker Camille de Bonhome.
📌The mentorship takes place from 8 to 12 June 2026 at The Centre for the Less Good Idea, Arts on Main, Maboneng, and culminates in an Open Moment on Friday 12 June.
🗣️We are looking for actors, directors, scenographers, and choreographers.
Participants will receive an honorarium for participation in the mentorship.

🎭SO | From Script to Stage is a programme of three newly incubated works of theatre that emerge directly from the interrelated series of mentorship programmes curated by Momenteur for the SO Academy, Athena Mazarakis.
“In these plays, we see writers dealing with key concerns in South Africa today, telling stories about migration, capitalism, and disconnection in the digital age,” says Mazarakis.
