I went searching for any kind of food but I couldn’t find anything and by the time I returned he was gone. Since then I’ve kept my eye out for him whenever I returned. One act of kindness from a stranger can change the fate of an animal.

Photo by @lesleymapstone / She was a stray dog living on a Kathmandu street. She slept on a concrete step outside a tailor’s shop where women wearing brightly coloured saris created bedazzling garments.
They lived in the apartment above the shop and their children played with the dog. They told me that she used to live inside a home, but she was kicked out when she grew to be the age of a dog that could become pregnant. They called her Binky, which means cute in Nepali.
She was their dog they told me, and I asked them to feed her, because she was very thin. She is a community dog they said, not their dog after all. They were too busy to feed her because they had to go to school.
I didn’t forget about Binky after I left the country. I found an adopter for her and I sent for her rescue 3 months after I returned to Canada.
By the time she was rescued she was so emaciated she could not be vaccinated. There was no soft tissue to inject into. It took another 3 months of food and recovery before we could vaccinate her and begin to plan her journey to Canada.
It was close to another six months before she could fly. But once she landed she was home. She is safe and loved and living her best life today, just around the corner from me. đź’—

I was amazed by how closely bonded the Tamang people had become to their horses, often speaking of their Mongolian horse people roots with pride. While other farm animals were not especially valued for their unique personalities, horses were, in the family with whom I lived.
