The night was young, slightly humid, but definitely electric. It was as if change was in the air. You could feel it, yet no one could put a finger on what it was exactly.
No one but…. the CHESS MAFIA, who were putting their fingers all over chess pieces left, right, and center as they bust through the doors at Rootdown for their follow-up event.
So successful was their debut that, despite the chaos, they were wanted back in full force and then some to sling more good times across tables and bars. Yet something was definitely different about the posse. No, not haircuts. It was new games. New rules.
This time around, the CHESS MAFIA brought with them a little bit of the East, with Chinese Chess alongside its classical variant.
This was a clear sign of evolution. From a simple yet fun first run, CHESS MAFIA had now amassed an even larger crowd with new formats, newer faces, and many returning ones from the old CRITICAL MASS crewdem. The night was just as much slinging pawns and bishops as it was war chariots and Xiangqi soldiers.
Drinks were flowing, pieces were strategically placed, banter was abundant. CHESS MAFIA was back in full swing, stronger and bigger than ever. Just look at the photos to see for yourself. And if you’re feeling what the older kids call “FOMO,” then make it easy on yourself by simply coming through next time. That’s right: CHESS MAFIA will be a regular thing now. Just make sure you’re a regular, too.
