A little over a year ago, my close friend @highjackkkk invited me to join his venture, Flip the City. The idea? Turning harmful yet nutrient-rich duckweed into biodegradable plant tiles that support the growth of local flowers and plants. These easy-to-use tiles make it simple for anyone to contribute to a climate-adaptive city—boosting urban biodiversity, improving water drainage, and reducing heat stress. Creating a circular win-win scenario that improves both urban and aquatic biodiversity and conditions. A concept so easy, everyone could place one and kickstart the green revolution, regardless of time, budget or experience. Fast forward to today: 15,000+ tiles have been replaced by biodiverse and local green. We’ve collaborated with 43 municipalities, sold tiles in three countries, and showcased them on national TV, in museums, and at every major design week in Europe. It’s been an incredible journey, proving that sustainable, impactful solutions are possible. Here’s to more of these adventures. 📸 Legend from Library Rotterdam #circular #circulardesign #sustainability #greentransition #greendeal

The dockless bike-sharing boom in Europe brought convenience to last-mile mobility, but also flooded urban areas with poorly maintained bikes, harming local economies and communities. Back in 2018, I designed and prototyped FairBike together with design studio The-Incredible-Machine. FairBike is a fair, decentralised, autonomous and local bike sharing platform aiming to provide a good and useful service for consumers while involving and investing in the local economy rather than harming it. In this way every bike - second hand or new - can become a FairBike, and everyone can add one to the network. The concept and prototype was presented during Dutch design week 2018.

For a little over two years I have been closely involved with the Resilient Designers Project together with Mieke van der Bijl-Brouwer, Rebecca Price and many others! The project aims to develop a more resilient design discipline. Together with @emmaursic we developed the Resilient Designer’s handbook. Published 2023, available at het Nieuwe Instituut.
