Luis Arencibia León

Barcelona-based designer Luis Arencibia explores the visceral intersection of life and dissolution in his latest collection, MORIVITAE. Developed at LCI Barcelona, the project is a deeply personal response to his mother’s battle with metastatic cancer, translating the raw realities of physical deterioration into a baroque visual narrative. Arencibia utilizes intricate embroidery inspired by mould, 3D-printed growths, and laser-cut poetry on textile scraps to mirror a body being overtaken by illness. By pairing these experimental textures with traditional elements like corsetry, ruffles, and macramé, the collection transforms a traumatic experience into a poetic study of the human condition and the inevitable relationship between the self and nature. MORIVITAE [del latín “mori” (muerte) y “vitae” (vidas)], se inspira en la batalla de mi madre contra el cáncer metastásico. El proyecto explora las crudas realidades del deterioro y la enfermedad, y abraza las perennes cuestiones de la condición humana, como son la trascendencia y la relación del ser con el cuerpo y con la naturaleza, recurriendo a la indumentaria como herramienta narrativa y de expresión artística. Bordados inspirados en moho y podredumbre, bultos de impresión 3D sobre tejido, poemas cortados a láser sobre retales, corsés, velos, volantes, transparencias, tul, macramé, encaje... Todo ello confluye en el barroquismo que caracteriza la colección.

HETERODOXIA_Pt.3 HETERODOXIA reveals that what society calls “deviant” is often what is most profoundly human.

HETERODOXIA_Pt.2 HETERODOXIA turns fashion into ritual, and the act of dressing into an act of resistance. Every piece tells a story of contradiction: sacred and profane, masculine and feminine, desire and guilt. The collection was born out of the uneasiness that, as queer people, we often feel about our identity, our perception, and even our safety.

HETERODOXIA_Pt.1 HETERODOXY /ˈhɛt(ə)rədɒksi/ (noun) - The refusal to conform. A defiance of the doctrines and norms that dictate what should be believed, desired, or seen as acceptable.

HETERODOXIA_MOODBOARD HETERODOXIA explores the overlapping stereotypes historically imposed on queer people; the deviant, the diseased, the dangerous, the deranged... Through fashion, these narratives of stigma are reimagined as symbols of strength and self-possession. The designs embody contradiction: restraint and desire, control and freedom, purity and corruption.
