Co to był za wieczór. Wczoraj odwiedził mnie mój dobry kumpel – Marcin Bocinski. Znamy się ponad 20 lat, razem współtworzyliśmy grupę Nemezis. To naprawdę wyjątkowy facet. Niezmiennie ciepły, uważny i zawodowiec w każdym calu. Prowadzi swoje studio masteringowe Legatomastering.pl – współpracuje ze śmietanką polskiej sceny niezależnej, ale też z artystami z całego świata. Studio ma certyfikacje Apple Digital Masters i Dolby Atmos. No i te rozmowy o miłości, muzyce, produkcji i o tym ile nam zostało... Bardzo dobry, bardzo prawdziwy, bardzo poruszający czas. Dzięki, Marcin. KLASA !

I’m sharing yesterday’s news, even though I didn’t work on this particular song. Viktoria @leleka_music will represent Ukraine at the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest with the song „Ridnym.” I’ve been working with Viktoria for several years and have mastered her three previous albums. It’s wonderful to be able to observe her artistic journey and contribute a little bit myself. Congratulations and fingers crossed. Go girl, let the Ukraine win! (link in comment)

How to experience music in Dolby Atmos?
LIVE SHOWS That’s right, immersive sound is appearing in more and more concert halls and theaters. One example is the Centrum Alternatywy in Warsaw. Many venues in Europe have been created where concerts are played only with spatial sound. Examples include Polygon Live in London, 4DSOUND in the Netherlands, and MONOM / 4DAUDIO at Funk-Haus in Berlin. Artists who play concerts with spatial sound include Jon Hopkins, Max Cooper, Nils Frahm, Ben Frost, Floating Points, and Kanding Ray. When are you going to join them? #dolbyatmos #immersivemusic #spatialmusic #polskamuzyka #musicproduction

How to experience music in Dolby Atmos? CARS It’s so logical that it would be strange if it were otherwise. Cars have always been equiped with a lot of speakers and are generally a pretty good environment for listening to music, due to the soundproofing of the interior. Revently manufacturers began implementing Dolby Atmos in new vehicles. It started with premium brands such as Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, Volvo, and Polestar. But you can also listen to Dolby Atmos in lower-priced cars, such as Hyundai and Tata. It’s just a matter of time when other brands start to put immersive audio systems into their vehicles. Hmm, great, but I love my old car, I and I’m not going to change it. So what now? WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED. There are devices that allow you to listen to spatial music in your old car. For example, Pioneer Sphera, which will turn 2 front and 2 rear speakers into a Dolby Atmos-compatible quad system, in similar way as I described in my previous post. #dolbyatmos #immersivemusic #spatialmusic #polskamuzyka

How to experience music in Dolby Atmos? QUADRO aka DO U HAVE ANY UNUSED SPEAKERS ? THIS IS A MUST READ FOR EVERY MUSIC CREATOR, but not only. Do you remember that Dolby Atmos is like vector graphics and can be scaled up or down to any number of speakers? You probably own an usb audio interface which likely has more than two outputs, and a pair of decent monitor speakers. This is your everyday setup for composing, producing and recording music. Now, do you have any old, unused speakers? The ones you had before you bought the new ones. Or the ones from your old audio system. If so, you can build a quadraphonic system. Add two additional speakers to the back or side of what you already have and connect them to the additional outputs of the interface. Remember to keep the same distance between the speakers and the sweet spot (where you sit). Now configure your OS so it sees the audio interface as 4 outputs quad system. Then, in the Apple Music preferences, set the Dolby Atmos playback to „auto” and voila. Hmm, ingenious, but different speakers for front and back? Will it sound good? GOOD POINT. It won’t be a reference quad system like in an acoustics textbook. But wait, how many of you have your speakers set and calibrated like pro studios do? Most often, speakers are placed wherever they can be, because listening to music is part of everyday life and cannot come before life itself.

Will it sound good? OH MAN, IT WILL. Opening up the sound space behind you is such an incredible experience that you will never want to listen to stereo again. Before I built a full Atmos system in my studio, I listened to music in quadraphonic sound with tiny Auratone speakers placed behind me. How did it sound? So good that it took me out of work for three days. I just wanted to listen and listen. #dolbyatmos #immersivemusic #spatialmusic #polskamuzyka

How to experience music in Dolby Atmos? SOUNDBARS These are elongated speakers, shaped like a strip or tube, containing up to a dozen speakers and a DSP processor. Initially, soundbars were designed to improve the sound in home theaters, replacing the sound from the TV. They reproduce Dolby Atmos or Dolby Surround sound in many different directions simultaneously and use advanced DSP algorithms and sound reflections from walls and ceilings to simulate a 3-dimensional space. So if a plane in a movie is supposed to fly overhead, it will. Soundbars easily connect to TVs, computers, and smartphones. They are suitable for both watching movies and listening to music. Cool, nice gadget, but sound reflected off the wall? It’s definitely not going to sound the same as in a studio. I’m not convinced. YOU’RE RIGHT. IT’S NOT QUITE THE SAME. THERE’S NOTHING LIKE THE SOUND FROM THE SIDE OR BEHIND YOU FROM A REAL SPEAKER. That’s why satellites were invented, i.e., speakers placed at the back or side, very often wireless. We are now talking about a multi-channel sound source at the front and two sources at the side or rear. Such a set will provide a real sense of space, not just an illusion. And it will fit in a small room in any apartment.

How to experience music in Dolby Atmos? HEADPHONES
Okay, headphones are just two small speakers in your ears, simple stereo, that can’t replace dozens of speakers.
GOOD POINT, but let’s take a closer look.
On regular headphones, you’ll hear spatial mix as “binaural” — in simple terms, psychoacoustic algorithms decode the multi-channel mix in such a way that you’ll hear some of the sounds coming from OUTSIDE our head. The space will be larger and wider. The effect depends on headphones quality and personal biological conditions; different people react to psychoacoustic effects to a greater or lesser extent.
I suggest switching between stereo and Dolby Atmos modes while playing music and listening carefully to everything on the sides. Okay, fine, and that’s all?
NO, THAT’S NOT ALL. If you have headtracking headphones, the ones that respond to the direction and position of your head, you can turn and move around inside a three-dimensional mix as if you were inside the music. I guarantee you’ll stay up all night and rediscover your favorite songs. Hmm, cool, any other advantages of listening to spatial mixes on regular headphones? YES. SOMETHING THAT NO ONE MENTION.
The Dolby Atmos format imposes very strict loudness levels. Without using technical language, a spatial mix cannot be too loud; it must have a considerable dynamic range so that the renderer which decodes the multi-channel Atmos mix to whatever you are listening on, can perform its calculations freely. What? Yes, let’s read it again. An Atmos mix must have a considerable dynamic range, it cannot be too loud or too compressed. While most contemporary music is pushed to the limits (because louder is supposedly better?) and some tracks are “unlistenable” on a decent equipment, Atmos mixes breathe with natural dynamics. Too quiet? Turn it up, you have a volume knob after all.
As a test for today’s post, I suggest Bjork’s song Pleasure is all mine from the album Medulla. #dolbyatmos #immersivemusic #spatialmusic #polskamuzyka

What is Dolby Atmos? It is a new spatial audio format that surrounds us from all sides, including above. We are inside a sound space. You have probably heard it in the cinema. And now you can hear it in music.
But wait, it must be very expensive and not for me. NOT TRUE. Let’s start with the fact that you carry Dolby Atmos music in your pocket every day, you just don’t know it. A smartphone with the Apple Music, Tidal, or Amazon Music app plays Dolby Atmos music. This format is not tied to any physical medium. All you need is what you already have, a smartphone or computer.
Okay, but I’ve heard that you need 11 speakers, I can’t afford them, I don’t have a room big enough for all of them, it’s not for me. NOT TRUE. I need to have 11 speakers in my studio to mix spatial music properly.
Okay, so how many speakers do I need? AS MANY AS YOU WANT. First, let’s see what you already have. My favorite analogy is that Dolby Atmos is like 3D vector graphics; you can scale it up and down without losing quality. A Dolby Atmos mix will sound right in a movie theater with 80 speakers, in my studio with 11 speakers, on your old 5.1 computer speakers, headphones, soundbar, and laptop. In subsequent posts, I will explain how to do this.
Now, an exercise for your imagination. Do you remember the intro to Pink Floyd’s Time? Imagine that you are in a room filled with clocks, and suddenly they all start ringing around you. Would you like to hear what it’s like to be a member of Steve Reich’s band playing Music for 18 Musicians? Hear what this piece sounds like from the inside? Imagine Billie Eilish singing Bad Guy inside your head. No, not in front of you, inside you.
