Environs, May 14th brings us the curious sonic landscapes of Newt Pal - synth wizard and instrument builder - and the improvisations of Celine Kang and Beth Ann Jones, an exciting guitar and bass duo that pushes into experimental territory. We're starting early - 6:30PM! Stick around after these sets for more boundary-pushing work on the Genre Ambiguous Showcase (It’s a GAS). @puddleafrogistakingabathin @celinekangsy at @dadabarnyc Celine (Suh Yeon) Kang is a guitarist, composer, and improviser based in New York. Influenced by European improvised music and Black American music, her work blends dense composed materials, non-traditional improvisations, and textural soundscapes. Celine has started her career in music as a recording artist and live performer, primarily performing music such as Gospel, R&B, and Rock. Her current work focuses on improvised music, original compositions, and leading multiple bands. These groups have performed at The Stone, IBeam Brooklyn, Shapeshifter, Nublu, and various venues in NYC. She recently performed with her quartet that includes Brian Marsella, Colson Jimenez, and Jacob Patrone, and a trio including Nels Cline and Josh Mathews as a part of her residency at the Stone. She also performs as a part of John Zorn's COBRA, and has performed at Roulette Intermedium, The Drawing Center, and Big Ears Festival.

Environs (the twelfth one) is coming up at @dadabarnyc ! Sunday March 29th -- Music at 7PM -- ~~~ Logan Takahashi is an artist and composer based in Queens, New York. While he grew up playing violin as a child in New Jersey, he was influenced by the nearby experimental electronic scene in Brooklyn, and went on to study electronic music composition at Oberlin. There he founded his first project, Teengirl Fantasy, with friend and collaborator Nick Weiss after they played a house party show together. Over the course of a decade, the dance music duo released acclaimed records on labels including Planet Mu and True Panther Sounds, collaborated with Kelela, Laurel Halo, and Panda Bear, and scored a Blade Runner-inspired Fashion Week collection for Opening Ceremony. In 2016, Takahashi signed to Ghostly International for a series of solo releases. His debut solo album, NeoGeo, is a zoomed-in study of timbre, rhythm, and melody ornamented with buoyant and incandescent sounds. He has also written scores for avant-garde dance pieces, soundtracked poignant documentaries, and performed his music all over the world. Mark Chinen (guitar) and Paul Sakai (drums) are longtime friends and collaborators. Their work explores place, self, friendship and family. Their 2025 release, Moon Obscured by Rain, explores these themes as well as the textural and timbral possibilities of their instruments with simple melodic motifs in short form, improvised music. Morgan Boyle is a poet in Queens. Leftpop is the project of composer, improviser, and producer Harrison Adams. He is the curator of Environs and passionate about environmental music in many forms. His current work is inspired by acoustics and phenomena natural world, including the movements of wind, rain, and clouds. paper gem produces sample-based hip hop and is experimenting with melding ambient, slowcore and electronic styles. He is a part of the 100Fold collective (a mix of rappers and producers) and has previously released projects with the collective, as a duo alongside rapper Nigel Xavier and beat tapes/remixes as a solo artist. He’s exploring visual art/collage and DJing to share some of his eclectic music tastes.

Environs XI: Bringing together music embracing texture, improvisation, and the environment. 2/26 at @dadabarnyc , 7:30pm! Environs is coming up next friday 10/17 at @dadabarnyc , 8PM! There will be fresh grooves and excellent fusions of sound from @blk_ikwe @friendswithheads @paper_gem and a surprise guest! . IKWE is an African American and Ojibwe artist and musician from St. Paul–Minneapolis, now based in Brooklyn. A first-generation descendant of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, her multidisciplinary practice includes music composition, storytelling, audio-visual installation, and hand drum making. She is a two-time recipient of the Brooklyn Arts Council Community Arts Grant (2018, 2019) and was awarded the 2022 AudioFemme Agenda Grant. In 2018, she was an Artist-in-Residence at The Shed, where she developed MAKADEWIIYAASIKWE (“a woman of African descent” in Ojibwe), a multidisciplinary performance work. Her work has been presented at the Wyckoff House, Lincoln Center Out of Doors with La Casita, Brooklyn Prelude Festival, SECCA (NC), Buckham Gallery (MI), Wa Na Wari (WA), and Blindside Gallery (Melbourne, Australia). Kelsey holds a BA from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and an MA in Music Technology from NYU Steinhardt, where she developed a virtual Indigenous hand drum. Friends with Heads is an electro-acoustic ensemble exploring compositional improvisation and experimental sound. Led by drummer Luke Runels, the group focuses on experiments in timbral dialogues, reductivist beats, and live warping. The pieces come together into a music that moves fluidly between droning ambient sound worlds, deep electronic grooves, and modal melodic jazz. Pulling from late Miles, along with the underground rhythms of the 90s, the late electronic work of Brad Mehldau, and Sakamoto—Friends with Heads feels like surrealism made sound; creating work that is both alien, and soulfully human. August 28th was the sixth edition of Environs; the release of “rain enough” on cassette ; and the launch of our latest zine issue, New Memento No. 2 with @paper_gem . Tapes and zines are available at the link in the bio, slowly coming to a record store near you, and I’m more than likely carrying one or two if you see me. For some more thoughts about the new album, I’ve been writing on the Patter & Hum blog (currently hosted on Substack). It’s hard to express in words how grateful I feel to be surrounded by such a community of artists, friends, family and neighbors, reminding me constantly of the importance of being together in space. . Big thank you’s for: The lovely folks at @dadabarnyc 🕯️🍸 The wild photographs by @markussherm 🙏🏻🙏🏻 The huge support and impeccable DJ stylings of @paper_gem - producer and cofounder of @newmemento_ 🎧🎶 The incredible performances by @katemohanty @puddleafrogistakingabathin @danielklag (his music accompanying this post as well) And very importantly - a big thank you to all y’all who came out!

rain enough tapes are here! Release show is happening at Dada Bar, this Thursday August 28th. I’m deeply grateful to — Pranav Mayuram, who has been a part of every phase of this journey, from listening and supporting as I untangled conceptual and artistic impulses, to generating together this vision for a record label that is devoted to the physical manifestation of music (more soon from New Memento!) Jack Mullin, who patiently engineered a substantial set of recordings on a Steinway grand piano in a DIY space, and did a wonderful job. Auxen Bohn who made the New Memento logo and is a fantastic artist and designer - hire them! Many friends new and old who have attended the Environs series at Dada and encouraged me along the way. And big, big gratitude to Phuong, my beautiful partner, who has given so much love, faith, and support in art and life. . @paper_gem @youdontknowjack__ @auxen.bohn @phuong_212zone @newmemento_ @dadabarnyc
