Test Dept + Brith Gof - Gododdin (1989)
Gododdin is a collaborative project between the socialist industrial collective, Test Dept, and the Welsh avant garde theatre group, Brith Gof, that tells a tale of anti-imperialist struggle against colonizing forces. Based on Y Gododdin, an early Welsh poem, recounting the story of 300 Celtic warriors in their 'hopeless' struggle against an invading force of 100,000 Angles, highlighting the dignity of struggle against crushing hegemonic forces. The music was accompanied by an anachronistic piece of Avant Garde political theatre that served not only as a warning against the encroaching proliferation of thatcherist economic and foreign policy, but an allegory to the plight of working people under these policies. Musically, it is an industrial masterpiece that merges traditional influences with the harsh mechanics of industrial noise. Reaching into the past and bringing into the recent past. A percussive flurry of voice and machinery and bagpipes to aurally drown your mind in this epic poem, a time machine. The album is an inspiring and worthwhile piece to add to any growing catalog of left/folk music.
