Intimacy is not closeness. It’s distance held together.
Stefan Simchowitz @stefansimchowitz presents Two of Us - Andrey Samarin @andreysamarin1 and Lera Derkach @lederkach working side by side without becoming the same.
Two practices. Two rhythms. One shared field.
The tension is the point.

Review By Catapult - @munchiesartclub
My work often begins with loose, almost abstract forms that I slowly sculpt into figures. The paintings are figurative, but during the process they tend to drift, morphing into something almost abstract themselves.
Even though I usually work with oil, and sculpting with paint might seem more obvious, this way of building a painting isn’t really tied to the material.
This work is made only with charcoal, but it still carries that sense of construction. Forms slide into one another, emerging and dissolving at the same time. Metamorphosis runs quietly through much of my work - I’m drawn to that unstable moment when it’s hard to tell where one form ends and another begins.
This and other works are currently on view in “Two of Us”, a duo exhibition with Andrey Samarin @andreysamarin1 at @simchowitzgallery 🐥🐥
