Between April 1 and May 31, 2026, libraries all across the West Coast are participating in One Book One Coast (OBOC), a coordinated effort to read and discuss George Takei’s graphic novel, They Called Us Enemy. Bonus: we'll be hosting a handful of programs throughout April and May tied into the themes of Takei's memoir.

Come to our Friends of the Ledding Library Quarterly Book Sale in the Community Room this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 16 & 17 from 10 AM to 4 PM. Lots of books, CDs, DVDs, socks, puzzles, and much more! Sunday is 10 bucks a bag day.

Calling all local history buffs and picture book fans! On Saturday, May 9 at 2pm, you are invited to join illustrator Julia Kuo for a presentation about her new book, Bing's Cherries. In this new picture book, artist Julia Kuo and author Livia Blackburne have created a modern American tall tale woven by a girl and her father about Ah Bing, the Chinese immigrant behind the Pacific Northwest’s most delicious cherries - developed here in Milwaukie!
Julia will read Bing's Cherries and talk about the process behind the book, along with an interactive drawing component and Q&A. The event is open to all ages, kids through adults.
@spokeandwordbooks will be joining us with copies of the book available for purchase, and Julia is happy to sign books following the event.

Join us on Saturday, May 2 as we celebrate El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day)! The fun kicks off with Spanish Storytime at 10:30am for all ages. From 11am-noon, kids are invited to decorate a book bag and choose a free book to keep.

Join us Monday May 4th for a conversation led by Dr. Linda Tamura: Taking the High Road - Oregon Japanese American WWII Veterans.
Tamura will begin by contrasting her lack of knowledge about Japanese American wartime experiences with George Takei's childhood memories - and her abrupt recognition as a young adult.
We’d like to extend a special invitation to any Japanese American families of Nisei veterans who might live in our community for special recognition.

Shay Mirk (they/she) is a graphic journalist, editor, and teacher who has lived in Portland, Oregon since 2008. Shay's newest book, Making Nonfiction Comics: A Field Guide to Graphic Journalism, debuted from Abrams ComicsArts in November 2025. They are the author of five other books, including Guantanamo Voices: True Stories from the World's Most Infamous Prison, an illustrated oral history of Guantanamo Bay. They are also a prolific zine-maker who runs a zine of the month club and truly loves giving zines away for free ✏✏✏
