Revolution Empower Her and SMC would like to thank professor Sharyn Obsatz for all her hard work and dedication to helping make this event happen. Get to know our Support Team: I am a full-time journalism professor at Santa Monica College and a faculty advisor for SMC’s award-winning student-run newspaper, The Corsair. I use my smarts, caring and creativity to help students build meaningful careers. I have taught journalism and media studies at SMC for 17 years. I earned a master’s degree in Communications from Cal State Fullerton and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Grinnell College in Iowa. I am a former reporter for The Gallup Independent, The Santa Fe New Mexican and The Press-Enterprise in Riverside, CA. My areas of research include digital news, social media, and Spanish-language media. I am the Southern California representative for the Journalism Association of Community Colleges, planning the fall student journalist conference. I have been a vegetarian for 37 years and served as a Peace Corps urban-youth-development volunteer in Paraguay. My husband is an LA Unified music teacher. Our son is 13. He loves soccer (particularly the LA Galaxy), the TV show Survivor and the streaming Netflix show “Death Note”. My goal for this class is for every student to succeed, earn a good grade, grow their journalism skills and produce journalism content they can be proud to share. Revolution Empower Her would like to introduce our next guest speaker Edwin Ulysses Rivera is native to Los Angeles, CA. He studied Film with an emphasis in Editing and Directing at CSULB. He has a passion for shows that tell diverse stories with plenty of heart and that represent or incorporate the LGBT community. He was recently co-producer on the hit show, "On My Block." He has also been editing for over 15 years on shows such as This Fool, Boo Bitch, Gentefied, The Last OG, and The Last Man on Earth for major studios such as Netflix, Twentieth Century Fox, and Hulu. He is currently pursuing his passion in directing as well as collaborating with producers on new exciting projects.
