First of three pieces that ended up in my Thesis show, “Wayside Shrine (Diorama)” envisions the future of connection with nature and others. A trailhead kiosk becomes a secular shrine, where found and made objects of philosophical and spiritual nature are left alongside maps or environmental information.
My thesis research had to do with possible cultural shifts towards reconnection with the world around us, including other people and our own bodies. Shrines make their way back into homes even in nonreligious contexts, people recall days of mourning doves and the wind pressing waves into grass, we wish to be apart from the digital world. Even though we might depart from modern social technology, virtual connection is still possible—we connect by visiting the same places as others, at different times, witnessing both the change and sameness that take place between moments. The evocation of folk art, virtual pilgrimage, and contemporary trends in design create a diorama of a future where we re-become part of our environment.
Prescribed Burn
•••up to interpretation what the three ladies mean. Many have said the fates, it’s been mentioned that they could be the Maid the Mother and the Crone, they could be ghosts, they might be made of fire. Their pose is drawn from a still in Eadward Muybridge’s book “Animal Locomotion” (1887).

kite room (2025)
••• she’s a very large enclosure-ish space, with a back wall that is entirely made up of paintings that wave in the wind and a ceiling made of ripstop nylon. for the few days she was up, this was a great spot to do work. each painting featured something which interacts in air somehow—by having empty space, by being something that consumes air, or by being something that is animated by air and its movement. i consistently am embraced by the thought that the air around us is not empty, it’s all substance. negative space is always full of something.•••

“a collection of things and a means for its display” as a project prompt resulted in me making a blanket fort for class. see second pic for my prof, hanging out in the fort.
