Happy 90th birthday to this beautiful lady. First flew on 5th March 1936 and designed by R J Mitchell after his success in winning the schneider trophy outright for Britain in 1931. The Spitfire (and its brave young pilots) was instrumental in saving Britain during the Battle of Britain and has become a symbol of our ingenuity, innovation and perhaps of Britishness. Sadly Mitchell died the following year (1937) of the Spitfires maiden flight and despite its role in defending Britain and it’s legacy still loved by generations today he was never Knighted, I wonder if as a county we can perhaps remember this great plane, its designer (never Knighted or honoured) and wouldn’t it be an occasion to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the schneider trophy win in 2031 or the centennial anniversary of the Spitfire in 2036!!
