“Talking to My Self” explores the complexity of self-communicative processes and offers an approach to making these visually tangible. It draws on the theories of Carl Gustav Jung and Hubert J. M. Hermanns regarding the self. The focus is on the interaction between environment, self-perception, and self-presentation, as well as the influence of social media and celebrity culture on these dynamics.
A central element of the practical work is the typeface “Ego,” which originated in a typography course on type as a form of individual expression and conceptually builds on its various references to the plurality of the self.

Ego is several. It is the I, the self-as-knower, as well as Me, the-self-as-known. Egos I is fluctuating between different, sometimes even opposing, positions communicating with each other about their Me’s and Mine’s, creating a whole “society of mind”. Ego is as tough, as it is soft. It is confident and shy. It is Grotesk as well as high contrast. Egos Me and Mine consist of its belongings as well as its environment, creating a blur between the internal and external. Ego is influenced by social and parasocial relationships, by its family and its enemies by Venus and by calligraphy.
