These two works, among others, by LEA SCHÄFER are part of our current group exhibition “Bowl of Oranges“…🍊
About:
Lea Schäfer experiments with different surfaces, integrating printmaking and collage techniques to explore the dynamics of visual space.
In doing so, she often works on wooden panels, incorporates elements like transparent paper into her compositions, and uses a glazing painting technique that enables subtle colour gradations and overlays. The atmospheric qualities come to the fore. Only in direct, physical encounter do these individual components reveal their full range of variation. Standing in front of an original, the viewer’s attention very soon turns to the painterly qualities of the surface itself.
Lea Schäfer’s paintings are consistently abstract. They deliberatly avoid figuration or narrative references. At the heart of her practice lies a deep, almost playful engagement with the possibilities of painting itself. The result is a finely tuned interplay of colour, form, composition, and gesture – inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the painterly complexity and lose themselves within it.
Lea Schäfer lives and works in Mainz and Wiesbaden. In 2016, she first completed her studies as a master student of Prof. Anne Berning at the Kunsthochschule Mainz @kunsthochschulemainz . The following year she also completed her art history studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Lea Schäfer is an artist and works as a curator at the Museum Reinhard Ernst @museumreinhardernst in Wiesbaden.
