What does the LGMC mean to you?
I was 52 when I came out and felt very alone. But LGMC people have so many different backstories. I’ve found my tribe where I can be my true self.
What has been a key LGMC moment for you?
I told my coming out story onstage at a concert. Afterwards two older members of the audience told me it had inspired them to go and do the same.
Why should you come see MOMENTus?
Every LGMC concert creates joy! You’ll leave with a smile not only on your face but you’ll be smiling inside as well. The joy is infectious.
Spotlight #5 - Martin Kaufman
What does the LGMC mean to me?
It means being part of a Chosen Family, which you love and you sometimes argue with, but who are always there for you, and with whom you feel safe and protected
What has been a key Moment for you in the LGMC?
Being part of the LGMC group that organised the vigil for the Admiral Duncan bombing on 1 May 1999, less than 24 hours after the deadly attack. Within a day, supported by other key gay community leaders, we had organised a vigil for 3,000 in Soho Square with voices from government, faith groups, community groups and the police all condemning this heinous act and uniting around solidarity and hope. The LGMC sang Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Not a Day Goes By’ which we are singing in our upcoming concert MOMENTus.
Why should you come to see us in MomentUS?
We are singing some wonderful songs that chronicle our 35 years, and some of the special events and activities that they echo. But more importantly, although the situation for LGBTQ+ people has immeasurably improved since 1991, there is still discrimination, there is still abuse, there is still oppression, and the attacks on parts of our community are growing. Supporting a loud, tuneful, in-your-face singing group like the LGMC is as important as ever.
Spotlight #4- Nicholas Gurreri
What does the LGMC mean to you?
I joined the chorus in 2008 because singing gives me such immense joy and pride.
What has been a key Moment for you in the LGMC?
My key moment was singing at David Stuart’s funeral, who was key in helping me overcome addiction and because of his support for our LGMC addiction support group.
Why you should come see MOMENTus?
Because this show will take you on a journey of chorus activism, pride, and solidarity!

What does the LGMC mean to you?
I didn’t know many gay people before I joined the Chorus, so it’s been a great opportunity to meet new people, and understand that many of the things I’d been holding onto from being in the closet weren’t just being felt by me. I have made, and continue to make, lifelong friends as a result.
What has been a key moment for you in the LGMC?
Undoubtedly for me it was singing at the vigil for the Orlando Pulse club shooting in 2016. The tragedy happened in the early hours of the morning after our History show, and we quickly organised to sing Bridge Over Troubled Water at the vigil. After the 2 minute silence, balloons were released and we started singing. Thousands of people were standing on Old Compton Street who just stood and listened as we sang. It was a great moment to be able to use our voices to show solidarity with our siblings not just in Orlando, but globally.
Why should you come see MOMENTus?
This is going to be such a joyous celebration of 35 years of the LGMC. We’ll make you laugh, we might make you cry, but we’ll definitely leave you feeling uplifted.
Spotlight #2 - Mark Ashton, AKA Matron!
What does the LGMC mean to you?
Music brings people together. It celebrates. It advocates. It challenges and it builds bridges! The LGMC embodies all this and more!
What has been a key LGMC moment for you?
At an outreach event during LGBT+ History Month in 2012 I was reminded that being LGBT+ is as much about history, culture, language, and community as it is about sexuality.
Why should you come see MOMENTus?
For the price of a show ticket you get a night out, a smile on your face, joy in your heart and know that you have financially supported necessary and thriving community action.

What does the LGMC meant to you?
The Chorus has become part of who I am. It’s given me a home, friends to hang out with, and a sense of real belonging.
What has been a key moment for you in the LGMC?
There have been so many. Singing with Sandi Toksvig in the Royal Albert Hall, for Katherine Ryan at the Palladium or appearing in Hannah Waddingham’s Christmas Special on TV were real highlights. But also some of the less flashy events we’ve been part of. The first Hand in Hand festival I went to in Cardiff in 2019 was really special for me, getting to know lots of new people in the Chorus (it was my first year), meeting lots of people from other gay choirs, and then singing on the iconic stage at St David’s Hall was amazing. Filled me with so much joy. As did the more recent tour to Italy. The tours and festivals are one of the things I look forward to most.
Why should you come see MOMENTus?
Because we’ll put a smile on your face whether you want us to or not. A tsunami of joy and fun will smack you about the face!
In preparation for our upcoming show MOMENTus, we’ll be shining a spotlight on some of our members who make up the wonderful LGMC community ❤️🎤 and of course… why YOU should come and see us celebrate our 35th anniversary on the 22-24th May! 🎟️Tickets in our profile links 🎟️
