The Hanji Pavilion was shaped by Korea’s traditional sense of proportion and structure, while metaphorically reflecting the subtle hues of hanji treated with traditional Korean oiling. It has been meaningful to direct the Hanji Pavilion, and I am deeply grateful to the Korea Craft and Design Foundation. @roomb26@moonhee.hwang
Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, where rivers have converged over centuries among vast mountains to shape fertile plains, is a land textured by nature and time, nurturing a spiritual heritage rooted deep within. Subtle, earthy colors from its legacy-rich soil evoke a quiet dignity unique to this region. Hanji paper from Andong absorbs history and contemplates the present, quietly sustaining the lifeblood and memory of its homeland through textures shaped by the land. Forms like Hap (Korean traditional container) and Ham (Korean traditional box) embody steadfast elegance as they endure the passage of time. These works echo the discipline and resilience of Andong’s traditions, honoring heritage through hardship and change, in a harmony of metaphor and likeness.

Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do, the wind carries a unique spirit. For centuries, its fertile plains and pristine waters have nurtured the region’s winds, fostering a land of abundance and leisure. This environment has cultivated an exquisite culture of pungryu—the art of elegant enjoyment. It is a spirit heard in lyrical melodies and rhythms, seen in the vistas over hanok eaves, and felt in the billowing of buchae (Korean traditional fan) and the perfect cadence of punggyeong (Korean traditional wind chime). Guided by the hands of master artisans, this spirit of pungryu continues to flow through the Jeonju hanji paper.
