Behind every project is a team of curious, thoughtful, and creative people. The Atelier @LDa Q&A series offers a closer look at the individuals behind LDa’s work, exploring the stories, interests, and inspirations that shape their perspectives both inside and outside the studio.
Meet Al Grigoli - Al has always had a passion for residential design, which inspired them to build a career designing homes for a wide range of clients. Now based in Washington, D.C., Al brings years of residential experience in New England to the DMV region, with projects ranging from urban hotel-to-condominium conversions to multi-million-dollar suburban properties. With a strong graphic design eye and a creative mind, Al brings enthusiasm and a deep understanding of collaborating with contractors to all their projects.
Designing a space that
- Achieves the client's goals
- Makes the best use of available space
- Creates a natural flow
... requires an exploration of design possibilities with the client's routine and desired goals in mind. Renderings allow both the design team and the client to get a more accurate picture how details come to life in a space.
An expression in materiality 🍃
Historic elements were selectively restored, including original pointed arch windows, while key features—stairs, fireplaces, and built-ins—were reinterpreted in a minimalist language. White, hand-applied plaster provides a calm backdrop, complemented by rift white oak millwork and sculptural fireplaces with Absolute Black granite cantilevered hearths.

Driven by design, inspired by the community 💫
Combining old and new materials, the Pleasant Street facing façade blends in with the character of downtown Northampton, while the exteriors on the interior of the site offer a colorful and contemporary design approach—a nod to the artistic community that Northampton fosters. Public art was integrated into the building exterior, main staircase, lobby and site facilities enclosure.

A family with a disabled daughter and a strong commitment to sustainable living engaged LDa to design a new home in their suburban Boston neighborhood. The couple desired a bright, open home that would be highly resource-efficient and intimately connected to the landscape and neighborhood, while giving their daughter the freedom to move independently throughout the main indoor and outdoor living spaces. An accessible path of travel (with zero-step transitions, wide passages, and an elevator) connects the home’s three main levels, each of which offers a universally-designed bathroom.
A full-height, open-riser stair crowned with operable skylights brings natural light into the core of the home while facilitating passive ventilation. Materials, finishes, and furnishings were chosen to create a modern, colorful aesthetic for this active young family. The project has earned a LEED Silver certification as part of the LEED for Homes program. Sustainable features include a super efficient framing system, spray foam & cellulose insulation, low-E windows, infrastructure for future PV array, superior daylighting, excellent natural ventilation, numerous indoor air quality measures, and drought/flood resistant landscaping. The home has a HERS Index of 50.
