Sharing Clip 2 of 6, the outro to Zeinabu irene Davis' sublime "COMPENSATION" that we screened as part of the Turner Classic Movies x #ReelAbilities #Disability in #Film showcase that aired on #TCM July 28. How disability sparked creativity—and enhances storytelling from the very first frame of the film. Check out the post-screening conversation with yours truly and TCM's Eddie Muller!

“If you don’t see it, you can’t dream it, and if you can’t dream it, you can’t be it.” ~ @lcarterlong Drafted into being a poster child at five, Lawrence soon realized walking was overrated and that making spaces accessible for everyone mattered more. What began as a six-month film screening in New York City featuring disability films led Lawrence to the @reelabilitiesny Film Festival movement. The industry either chooses to “deal with” disability or avoids it altogether. @peri.rhiannon experienced this while seeking an agent and publisher for her book, ultimately signing with a hybrid company whose inclusive values drew her in. She wanted to be accepted for who she is, not found lacking for who she isn’t. ReelAbilities views disability through a kaleidoscopic lens, where those who write, create, produce, and film these stories are seen in full. Too often, disability narratives are framed as heroic, tragic, or “inspiring” for simply existing. This festival flips the script, showcasing the full spectrum of the disability community. In this episode of the Step Out of Line Podcast, “Only By Breaking the Rules Can You Create New Ones,” we explore disability in the arts, the barriers to inclusion, and why stepping out of line is second nature and necessary. Tune in! ✨ For more information, visit reelabilities.org. This year’s festival runs April 23–30, with many films available to stream afterward. 🎙Full podcast interview available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, iHeartRadio, YouTube, and Amazon Music. Disability is one of the largest communities globally, yet it remains one of the least represented on screen, with only 1%-3% visibility. In this week’s episode of Pushing Forward with Alycia Podcast, I had the opportunity to speak with Lawrence Carter-Long about the critical issue of disability representation in media and the impact of storytelling on our perceptions of possibility. Lawrence Carter-Long, Director of Engagement at ReelAbilities International, shared his experiences growing up with cerebral palsy and being a 1970s “poster child.” He emphasized how early exposure to media shaped his understanding of its power. Key insights from Lawrence include: - “Stories shape public understanding. What we see becomes what we believe is possible.” This month, the ReelAbilities film festival is a powerful reminder that by changing the narratives, we can transform how the world understands disability. Please tune in to the new episode where you get podcast and share within your communities. 🔗 Link In BIO /reelabilities-is-changing-disability-representation-in-media-lawrence-carter-long/ Image description in comments! @lcarterlong @reelabilitiesny @pushingforwardpodcast #Disability #RepresentationMatters #Media #Film #disabilityawareness

Director of Engagement @LCarterLong reflects on "What Awards Culture Gets Wrong about Disability, Effort, and Authenticity" in the latest issue of Able News Read Online 📰 https://zurl.co/05IUo [Image Description: Black and orange graphic with a headshot of Lawrence Carter-Long and his quote in Able News: "In real life, disability is more than a two-hour lesson in courage with a string section soundtrack. To folks livin’ it, disability is more about logistics and language. Bureaucracy and improvisation. Access and denial. Community and conflict."]

Throwback to this powerful conversation at The Female Quotient Lounge @femalequotient at Sundance Film Festival 🎤✨ A few years back, I had the honor of sitting with my friend Nic Novicki, an incredible actor and the founder of the Disability Film Challenge in partnership with Easterseals and the wonderful Lawrence Carter-Long, Director, Disability Media Alliance Project,—to talk about something I deeply believe in: creating more opportunities for disabled talent on set… not just in acting, but across all departments. I’ve always been an advocate for disability awareness. And now, after being hit by a drunk driver and experiencing disabilities myself, this mission is even more personal. Disability has no gender. No race. No “look.” It’s simply part of the human experience and it deserves visibility, access, and respect. If you’re a filmmaker, storyteller, or creative: I highly encourage you to check out the Disability Film Challenge. Registration closes March 23rd. Let’s keep building an industry where everyone belongs. 🤍♿️🎬 #DisabilityAwareness #InclusionMatters #AccessibilityInFilm #DisabilityFilmChallenge #RepresentationMatters

Perhaps my favorite thing about listening to "Sleepy Hollow" Saturday mornings on WXPN are not only the discoveries that ease me into the weekend, it's also the surprise visits from old, dear friends. IMAGE: Amazon Alexa device reads "The Blue Nile - A Late Night Train"
