We built Equinox on referrals. Not ads. Not influencers. Referrals. From day one, we had a simple rule: For every new member, we should generate 5–6 referrals in the next 3 months. And close at least 3 of them. Why? Because when you only have one location, you can’t “market” your way to growth. You have to earn it. Here’s what we did. When someone joined, we told them: If you refer a new member and they join, you get a month free. Some members literally earned an entire year free. They became our ambassadors (we didn’t call it that yet). Then we added a second lever: Exclusive merch you could only get by referring members. We made a bomber jacket with a big Equinox logo on the back. Everybody wanted it. But you couldn’t buy it. You had to earn it. That jacket turned members into walking billboards and they loved it. The lesson? Word of mouth isn’t luck. It’s a system.
