>replaced cabinet hardware with @kitchenhardware_nancy in Antique Brass to match the Walker Tapered Sconce from @potterybarn in Tumbled Brass over the sink
>designed custom wood trim to cover variable gap between base cabinets and new quartz counters
>added all new Samsung Bespoke and KitchenAid appliances, Moen sink and faucet
>preserved vintage charm of original doorbell coexisting with the Nest thermostat at the threshold of the entry hall
>added wood paneling from @menardshomeimprovement , leather @article bench, @modholicusa tulip table, and @bludot pendant on a dimmer to make the breakfast nook the most irresistibly cozy, #hygge place in the house.

The entry space is one of the most important parts of a structure- the first and last thing you experience. To make this entry more functional and beautiful, we designed a 'waist-high shelf' to hold mail, keys, hang hats, bags, guest coats or plants! and added a shoe bench; this unique piece in reclaimed Pine from @woodworkat17th was a perfect fit.

We spent the fall planning and designing and most of the winter managing the implementation of an extensive interior design project in Midland, Michigan, a beautiful city with an impressive quantity of midcentury modern architecture woven into magical leafy neighborhoods.
The main goal that guided our restoration approach was to preserve vintage charm while including tasteful modern updates; there is something sacred about preserving original features while reducing cost, time, disruption and the amount of waste going to the landfill.

While I did not have the pleasure of knowing or meeting him, I've been inspired by and following Nigel Dunnett's work for many years. I am saddened to hear of his passing and hope his family knows how much he and his contributions to landscape architecture and planting design meant to the world.

Many good things are possible that don't require millions of dollars.
Trash can be picked up, wildflowers and native grasses can be seeded in where weeds and invasive species are taking over; temporary art, seating, and pop-ups in rights-of-way adjacent to vacant, abandoned properties can be small but impactful ways to mitigate the effects of disinvestment and decay.
Small things usually inspire larger things.

I really appreciate that the City of Midland #Horticulture program has left these plantings standing dormant around City Hall and County offices.
The earthy hues and textures look gorgeous, provide habitat and food for wildlife over winter, and are a good example of how simple changes in landscape management can have a big impact while costing nothing.

The only way to activate your downtown is to have enough people living in it.
Without mixed-use zoning with reasonable entitlements, it's a shopping center with better aesthetics.
You'll always be chasing, trying to attract customers, businesses, investment, growth.
And what it needed all along was people there all the time who care because they live there- not coming in, shopping, dining, having the coffee meeting and then leaving it empty and lifeless until the next business day.
Your downtown doesn't need another event or expensive bond package for creative paving or more parking. It needs more people living in and near it.

Clear boundaries are important and protect both sides.
Unless part of an intentional, coordinated effort with adjacent properties to blend plantings between two sites, we like to use edging in planting areas along property lines to show clear demarcation and prevent plants spreading in either direction.
Here the groundcover Pachysandra has spread over the years, encroaching onto the neighboring property and obscuring the boundary.
Lack of clarity around property lines leads to confusion over maintenance and management creating conditions for conflict or even disputes that get legal.
Clear is kind.

Fall and winter are the best times to plan a project for early spring construction. Unless quite small in size or scope most projects take several months to properly plan and design, get through bidding, scheduling, and sourcing with contractors.
If the design process is started in spring when warmer temperatures inspire thoughts of lush gardens the process is rushed, implementation gets a late start, and plant availability/sourcing becomes challenging.
