We’re proud to share that our Pennsylvania Menthol Tobacco Capacity Building Project has been recognized as a Quit & Thrive Challenge Winner by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)! The Quit & Thrive Challenge highlights community-derived solutions to reduce menthol cigarette smoking and strengthen the evidence base for interventions among populations with higher rates of menthol use. It showcases successful, community-led approaches from local and state organizations working to address this issue. Our work focused on raising public awareness, building capacity among organizations and professionals, and expanding access to menthol-specific quitting support through Pennsylvania’s free quitline (1-800-QUIT-NOW). This week, from April 11-17, we recognize National Black Maternal Health Week. Racial disparities are profound and urgent. For instance, Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. Multiple factors contribute to these disparities, such as variation in the quality of healthcare and underlying chronic conditions rooted in systemic and structural inequities. In this article, our team reflects on the Maternal Health Summit we hosted in 2025, where community members, health experts, and families came together to build understanding and discuss how to address the disparities black women and many birthing people are experiencing.
