Sikumit Aisimajugut / At Home on Ice / ᓯᑯᒥᑦ ᐊᐃᓯᒪᔪᒍᑦ” - 16 January 2026 Roundtable on Housing in Inuit Nunangat - University of Toronto - John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design #lateraloffice_sikumitaisimujugut - Organized around two panels, “Sikumit Aisimajugut / At Home on Ice” examined the idea of the home from the inside-out and outside-in in Arctic cultures. “Inside-out” centred on the ideas shaping cultural understandings of housing, from the ways people live inside the home, to going out on the land as an extension of the home, as well as the importance of traditions such as country food. “Outside-in” considered the larger, often exterior, forces shaping housing issues in the North—policy, logistics, and climate change—and challenges in delivering appropriate housing in the region. - Exhibition Design: Lateral Office Inc. - Jessica Babe, Lola Sheppard, Mason White with Mark Bennett Organizers: Mason White - Lola Sheppard Speakers & Discussants: @nicoleluke Nicole Luke - @shyniaya Shyniaya Duffy - TNT Nuuk, Helena Lennert - @nunavuthousingcorp Stephen Westlake - Northern Futures, Jesse Ajayi - @kativikregionalgovernment Guy Yango - @nunavuttunngavik Rachel Seepola Michael - @blouinorzes Catherine Orzes - James K Bird - Mark Bennett Funding: The Irving Grossman Fund in Affordable Housing; Photos by Fu Su.

LO travels // Barbican Estate, London, UK / Chamberlain, Powell and Bon, 1965-76 // This Grade II listed complex is comprised of more than 2,000 units of apartments, maisonettes, and houses across 40 acres, 19 buildings, and 5 primary garden areas among other shared and private green spaces. It is a continuous urban fabric prioritizing pedestrians, landscape, and social spaces of various scales of intimacy. Visiting it in its 50th anniversary (on a Wednesday), it still feels deeply contemporary and its public spaces are used with love by all ages.

LO travels // Various housing projects, London, UK / A remarkable collection of new and not new housing across London. Besides getting density right, massing and open space are in balance with landscapes and ground materials being provided with care. Featured here: Pollard Thomas Edwards, Fraser Brown MacKenna, Peter Barber Architects, Studio Egret West, and classics: Barbican Estate (1970s) Arnold Circus (1890s). @peterbarber12 @studioegretwest @fbm_design @pollard_thomas_edwards

LO travels // V&A East Storehouse, London, UK / Diller, Scofidio + Renfro // Housing over 500,000 artefacts in a open warehouse shelving system where one can “check out an object” like a library, this adaptive reuse of the 2012 Olympic media centre makes the museum definitively public. The Barrisol ceiling bathes the centre uniformly allowing clear registration of object form and colour. Huge thanks for the detailed behind-locked-doors tour by Chief Curator @brendanpcormier at @vamuseum - bravo @diller_scofidio_renfro

Sikumit Aisimajugut / At Home on Ice / ᓯᑯᒥᑦ ᐊᐃᓯᒪᔪᒍᑦ” // 9 Dec 2025 to 16 Feb 2026 - University of Toronto John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design @uoftdaniels and 25 Feb to 25 March 2026 - Carleton University School of Architecture and Urbanism @carleton_architecture #lateraloffice_sikumitaisimujugut - Sikumit Aisimajugut chronicles ideas of home and housing in Inuit Nunangat from the intimate scale of domestic spaces to the large-scale policies and logistics that shape the making of homes in the region. Inuit Nunangat is the homeland of Inuit across the four regions of Nunavut, Nunavik (northern Quebec), Nunatsiavut (northern Labrador), and the Inuvialuit Settlement region (Northwest Territories), in the Arctic region. The exhibition consists of (1) a large panoramic drawing, (2) a series of tables with embedded documents and other printed matter, and (3) a custom typeface and artworks by Mark Bennett. The large wall-sized drawing illustrates the duality of both the “inside-out” and “outside-in” conditions and experiences of home in Inuit Nunangat, showing some 30 different moments of home. The tables, shaped as ice floes, are lodged into the gallery niches to create reading rooms inviting visitors to browse the documents, pamphlets, books on home and housing representing the four regions of Inuit Nunangat since the 1950s. Artist and designer Mark Bennett developed a custom typeface and drawings of a reconstructed traditional summer and winter home. - Exhibition Design: Jessica Babe, Lola Sheppard, Mason White with Mark Bennett Support: The Irving Grossman Fund in Affordable Housing // Photos by Fu Su.

Mason White (@uoftdaniels & @lateraloffice ) delivers a lecture titled “Drifts, Piles, Tundra and Tree-lines” on March 17 at noon. ❄️White is Professor and Director of Master of Urban Design and of the Post-Professional Program at University of Toronto Daniels Faculty and founding partner with Lola Sheppard of Lateral Office. White pursues design research—in exhibition, publication and building forms—on public infrastructures, including in northern contexts. Their project “Arctic Adaptations” was awarded a Special Jury Mention at the 2014 Venice Biennale in Architecture and they presented Contested Circumpolar: Domestic Territories in collaboration with Arctic Design Group at the 2021 installment “How Will We Live Together?” White’s publications include: “Pamphlet Architecture #30, Coupling: Strategies for Infrastructural Opportunism” and Many Norths: Spatial Practice in a Polar Territory. He is also a founding editor of the journal Bracket and co-editor of Third Coast Atlas: Prelude to a Plan. The “Indigenous Wellness in Canada” won the 2021 Holcim Foundation Silver Award for Sustainable Construction in North America. And their project Inuusirvik Community Wellness Hub was recognized with an 2025 AZ Award of merit, and articulates “a distinct northern vernacular,” from permafrost-preserving piles, wind-deflecting design, and bright, sustainable cladding. The series, “GEO–MATTERS,” asks how designers might respond to the earth’s matter, forces and signals, including the unruly disturbances intensified by the climate crisis. “GEO–MATTERS” is organized by Rania Ghosn (@_rghosn ), Associate Professor in MIT Architecture and Director of SMArchS Urbanism Program, and co-hosted with the Leventhal Center for Advanced Urbanism (LCAU) @mit_lcau @mitsap @mitarchitecture
